17Apr18 - ARIES D-ERF on C8 + PST Etalon Images

Post by yltansg »

It was a colourful sunrise

Followed by lots of clouds and turbulent seeing.

This is the 4th of my 5 PST etalons. From the following result, it looks like one that belongs to the "just ok" 80% category. What do you think?

Hi Alfred: I like #3 the most, seems to be the sharpest. This etalon seems to be pretty good.

Thanks Franco. I went back to look at the images captured with my first PST etalon. It may be better than this one. Unfortunately weather doesn't permit imaging today.

For the #3, my settings are -
Exposure : 26 mSec
Gain : 18643
Gamma : 1.88

This etalon is not bright even for me to bring the exposure to < 5 msec necessary for reducing the effects of turbulence.

Looks good, makes sense what you say about it being a bright etalon, I was looking at the pictures before reading what you put and thought the images looked slightly soft, would make sense with a longer exposure not freezing the seeing.

The best F/D (on the camera chip) for IMX174 is about F/18-22. No necessity to go slower - you will not win in the detalization and sure will loss in ability to do a high resolution imaging with short exposures.

A difficult test in turbulent conditions. It will be interesting to see the results when seeing improves.

A nice sample of what the scope/etalon can do...better seeing should make things better. I would say that image #3 is sharpest.

Hi Valery,

I have tried imaging with longer exposure and confirmed that it doesn't help. Thanks.

Thanks Mark, Stu and Brian for your comments. From a few imaging sessions, I have concluded that this is the best etalon (out of the 5 that I have). However it is not able to deliver the high resolution I am looking for. I will continue to use it to find the best that it can deliver.
