Today's Awesome Horsetail Massive Prominence & SunSpot AR2709 | HA, CA | May 9th 2018
Hey all,
There's a super long horse tail prominence that is very feint but super interesting, very big and long, you can see it's base clearly but if you push it, you can really see that thing is really wispy and long. Really lovely to look at! I had some rather poor seeing, but was able to grab some data and do a little high resolution of the details today of the active regions, the bigger prominence groups and spicules, sunspots AR2709 and AR2708 in two wavelengths.

Re: Today's Awesome Horsetail Massive Prominence & SunSpot AR2709 | HA, CA | May 9th 2018
I had checked other images and GONG to see what was out there before I went outside to view(EAA) and then image, but didn't see any large features. While I was just scanning the limb with my exposure values set for prominence imaging (10ms, 99 gamma, gain at 150~200 with F35) I noticed the feint wisps coming from a typical prominence base. So I imaged it a few times at higher gain to get some data on it and stacked it and then stretched it and then further processed the wisps out so that they could be seen. I'm sure I would have missed this prominence visually as it is so very feint.
Here's the data from initial stack, then the stretch, then the dodge on exposure midtones to bring up the wisps:

I just measured the pixels via scaling and this prominence was approximately 1/7th the diameter of the sun itself. So it's approximately 15.6 Earth diameters long. How crazy! The scale is approximately 123 miles per pixel here (very rough measuring/math). Around 123,000 miles in horizontal length, give or take.

Wow!!!! what a prom! absolutely super I have noticed that GONG isn't always right, well it is right but the resolution and exposure isn't always able to pick out the long faint ones. I have been surprised in the past thinking there wasn't much about and then finding a faint beauty or huge detached prom a long way out in real life.

Great catch Marty especially the last with all the detail drawn out. A welcome sight in these low activity times.
