Sunday Sun 3rd June_RCT_Ha

Post by Carbon60 »

Lovely blue skies although with a hint of cloud building in the North and East and some haze starting to develop right where it shouldn't

Best viewed as the 'original' from Flickr.

The session was paused as I waited for the haze (precipitated from a contrail) to pass..... long wait!!

Thanks for looking.

Great resolution, Stu. I love the looks of the setup too.

Hi Stu,

The result is clearly better than all before! Nice processing too.

I noted that you do use some oversampling. The image scale you do use with a 10" scope is significatly larger
than I do use with my 11" scope. Smaller scale will makes imaging easier - shorter exposure, larger FOV, better
seeing freezing and faster fps. I would recommend F/18-20 for a camera with IMX174 chip.

Nice to see the pics of your setup Stu, looks like it's delivering the goods. I got the HaT out first thing this morning but seeing was mush so put it straight away.

Interesting setup, I'm curious about how to rear-mount fast focal-ratio etalons behind larger scopes, be they SCT or refractor (though mainly interested in SCT at the larger apertures for compactness and weight). Especially finding a way to use a 50mm or 60mm etalon, instead of a PST etalon to avoid the quality of copy variation in the PST etalons, or simply getting a double stack unit and using that behind a larger scope, if possible. Would love to know more.

Very best,

Many thanks everyone for your kind comments. Like all these things, practice and homing in on things that work are what count.....and I'm still learning! AR2712 is/was a particularly spectacular target with loads of dramatic structures on a large scale.

Thanks for your feedback, Valery. I processed these using the re-sampling x2 function in Autostakkert 3 which made the image quite large, but my thinking was that this would yield finer detail in the stacked image. Maybe I should use 2x2 binning to reduce the exposure time as well.

I think the scope is running at about F35 with a 2.5x Powermate. Maybe I should use a 1.5x barlow instead to bring it closer to F20.... more experimentation to be done. I was just so pleased to be able to capture something worthwhile before the sky conditions deteriorated.

Very best,
Hi Marty,
I employ a collimating lens mounted inside the rear of the scope of an appropriate focal ratio to produce parallel rays for the etalon. The Lunt 35 seems to work quite well since the etalon(s) are front mounted.
