July 21st Session

Post by MapleRidge »

Good day everyone...

It looked like a good morning to image yesterday (Saturday July 21st), with good seeing and clear skies after breakfast. The only down side was a strong SE wind which buffeted the scope most of the session, but I hoped the image stacking software would follow the image motion during the capture sequences. I followed the same procedure as usual...full disk Ha followed by higher resolution Ha though the modded scope. At the end of the session I also grabbed a few full disk WL and CaK images as well.

The trio of full disk images is presented below:
compare.jpg

The individual images were all captured with the PGR Grasshopper Express camera (ICX674 chip), with the LS80T/LS75FHa/B1200Ha DS solar scope used for the Ha shots. The image is a composite of separate disk and limb exposures, with the limb inverted.

The WL and CaK images were captures through a Lunt 80mm, f7 ED scope that I just finished mounting a focuser on last week and provides the same image scale as the solar scope. The WL images used a Lunt solar Wedge/Baader Continuum filters and the CaK used a Lunt solar Wedge/B1800CaK/Baader K Line filter set:

The remaining images were all through the modded CR150/DSII/B1800Ha solar scope, with a 3x tele-extender ahead of the ZWO174MM camera. The disk had a few nice filaments and proms, and an AR in the making. The first image set is a 6 image mosaic of the area around what was to be named AR2716:

There was a little tuft of activity that had recently rotated onto the SE limb as well:

The western limb had a few areas that showed some activity, which I believe were some of the old AR's that had been present earlier in the week...very quiet now:

I believe there are a few SER files yet to process, which was an attempt to record the change in appearance of AR2716 as I adjusted the pressure tuning on the scope across the entire pressure gradient to show the views in the red through blue wings. I hope to finish that up today.

One bit of good news is the wind that blew all day yesterday finally brought some rain, which after 6+ weeks of limited rainfall is a welcome relief for the crops...hope it last the rest of the day ;)

Questions and comments are always welcome,
Brian

Thanks Derek!

Looking forward to seeing the new scope and what it can do...are you set up to do WL and CaK as with it as well?

A very fine crop of images Brian, you did well to pick up the tiny spot. I really enjoyed the proms, very smooth and wispy details :bow

Thanks for your comments Alexandra :bow

I was surprised that the images came out as sharp as they did with all the wind induced vibrations during the session :o

Hi, Brian

A nice collection of images. Thetre is some very fine detail in the high res prom shots. I'll be looking for some "tufts" of activity later today (July23) and I hope the proms shown on NSO/GONG survive the wait.

I'm also testing my c9.25 with a 0.8X c mount reducer in place, mounted directly on the camera with 2 spacers to knock the reduction down to about 0.7X.

Lou and Franco...

Thanks for your comments on the session, always appreciated :bow

Lou, is your C9.25 an Edge or original SCT configuration? Hope you get some clear skies today as I am pretty much clouded over with more rain to come.

Brian I may have some Solar film somewhere but I may have to see if Valery does an ERF for this size.Seems Baader needs to sell you a Solar spectrum filter with there ERFsthese days and I,m unsure of the Daystar quality t this size.Iwill try it on the moon first.PS picked it up today still in the pickup it came with. Feather Touch motorised focuser as well. Will keep you posted my first pics will probably be of the moon with the DSLR.

Hi, Brian

The c9.25 is the non-Edge version.

Unfortunately, that day our skies were very hazy to overcast and imaging was not an option. Maybe today (July 24).
