Today's Major Solar Prominences | 150mm & Quark | July 29th 2018

Post by MalVeauX »

Heya,

Mars opposition last night was a total bust of clouds. But, I woke up to a cloudless sky. Weird? Stupid Florida... Anyhow, I didn't even make coffee and just darted out to the observatory after I checked GONG and noticed some rather splendid prominences popped over since yesterday which is fantastic. Three really large nice groupings, two of which are really impressive, the other is very feint but still quite large. Nothing on the surface of the disc, barely even a filament to really even look at or image. But the proms make up for it quite nicely. Pointed the 6" refractor at them. The seeing was pretty horrible. I had to gather a ton of frames to even have hopes to stack 30ish frames, but it worked out at least enough to show something. The added focal length definitely makes it harder to image than before (5040mm focal length now).

Equipment:

Celestron 152mm F8 Refractor + Baader 2" UV/IR Block + 210mm of extensions (my OTA tube was shortened)
Quark Chromosphere
ZWO ASI174MM Camera
