ISS Transit August 7

Not much to see on the Sun, but an ISS transit late afternoon. Whole day Sunshine, then clouds started to form and 1 minute before the transit the Sun was still obscured by a thick cloud. Then suddenly it cleared, 1 second transit and a few seconds later another cloud dimmed the image.
Because of all the clouds, no time to adjust the camera in the correct position.

Cadence of the image was not really correct (and using the ASI178 wit 6.4 Mpixel at around 70 fps, a few gaps occured in the capture. In the final assembly I skipped a frame every 2 frames (approx) so it looks a little bit better than the full capture.

this is how the "full" capture looked. Clearly shows the camera "hick-up

A very fine capture. I'd love to capture one of these transits myself sometime. So much has to come together at the same time.

Quite a challenge. Well done.

Stu.

Thanks,

well you need some things (and luck) coming together.
- A transit needs to happen
- Needs to be a good one, with ISS close to earth
- Weather
- Preparation

Preparation could have been better. As you can see from the detail (100% crop) at full resolution, there is still room for improvement

I’ve managed to capture 3 solar and 1 lunar transit in the past year.
Your zoomed in shot is really nice.
Was it the clouds that caused your hiccup or just an anomaly?
I think it adds character to the image.
Nicely done.

Thanks Alexandra, Jim and Robert.

Not the clouds. I had set the camera to high-speed mode to allow faster capture rates. That seemed to be a mistake. The ASI-178 has 3096*2080 pixels, so that puts a lot of stress on the USB 3 and cpu. I have a very fast PCI M2 ssd in that machine so writing the data should not be the problem. At high speed with that cam I see frame rate around 59 fps but occasionaly it drops slightly for a moment, so that is where I get the delays. (Should do a check from the timestamps in the SER file) Actually I was very lucky, because frame rate was almost to high and images were almost overlapping. Should have checked that on beforehand, but ...
