Today's Sun, just before sunset, from the 12th floor of a condo building!

Nice rig and nice shots Daniel! It's not AR12717 though, that passed over the limb a day or so ago, this is the remnants of what was AR12715 that first appeared mid June. AR12717 is what is designated here as AR12713 http://spaceweather.com/archive.php?vie ... &year=2018

The sunspot naming system can be confusing!

Here's the active region you photographed that I got a picture of in June, it's just to the left of centre https://brierleyhillsolar.blogspot.com/ ... -june.html

Thank you Mark for that correction.

I got the number from https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/products/solar-region-summary last night, thinking it was that region; I must have misunderstood the time window for data validity.
One question: how do I find the correct number of an active region on the current Sun, when the originating sunspots have disappeared and that old region comes around once more? I also found the site: https://www.raben.com/maps, where is shows 12717. Is there a more reliable website for this?

Thanks for your help,

Daniel

Just to confuse things when they come around again they get renumbered. I tend to use solen http://www.solen.info/solar/images/charmap512.jpg

Thanks Mark, for this excellent source of information. I'll use it from now on.
