August 23rd - 3 Wavelenghts

Post by MapleRidge »

Good day all...

I had to wait a few days to get clear skies after returning home from the summer holiday road trip, but Thursday and Friday both offered beautiful clear skies. I have the images from the 23rd ready, so I'll start with them. When I took my first look at the sun through the Lunt Ha scope I was very happy to see that the activity was continuing and would be able to get good images. The seeing, however, was very poor and the images taken at longer focal lengths did not work out.

The first images are through the LS80T/LS75FHa/B1200Ha double stacked solar scope, using separate frames for the disk and limb details. The limb frame is inverted to enhance the small proms:

The next set of images were taken through the Stellarvue 110mm (F7) ED OTA for full disk WL and CaK images. The WL images used the standard Lunt Solar Wedge/Baader continuum filter and the CaK were through a hybrid solar wedge/B1800CaK filter plus a Baader K Line filter installed in the camera nosepiece. The full disk WL set is shown first:

I tried a new setup for a higher resolution WL image...a new addition to the observatory is a C9.25 Edge HD OTA, which I used with the Lunt Solar Wedge and Daystar full aperture ERF. Seeing limited the results, but this was the result at prime focus:

The CaK set were all through the SV110, with the full disk at prime focus and the higher resolution images with a 3x tele-extender ahead of the camera:

Below is a pic of the Hybrid CaK Wedge...it is based on the unit that Lunt sells to mate up with the LS152 scope, but I had them install my B1800CaK filter since I already had it. The wedge allows use of scopes up to 152mm where the standard CaK filters are only recommended on 100mm maximum. The B1800CaK filter elements are installed in the blue tube after the light passes through the wedge. The K Line filter is not shown, but it threads into the nose of the camera.

The 3 scopes set up on the mount are shown below...LS80T on the left, C9.25Edge in the middle, and the Stellarvue 100 on the right. If the weight isn't too much, I may change the scopes around and still use the two 150mm refractors..,I will sort this out over the fall.

That's it for the session form Thursday...Fridays work in the processing queue and hope to have it ready later today.

Question and comments are always welcome,
Brian

Thanks Franco!

With all the nice sunny days while on holidays I was wishing I had brought the PST, but I figured the limited activity would not show much and Sandy figured I needed break from solar work too ;)
