Today's Proms, Full Disc & Animations | HA | Sept 20th 2018

Post by MalVeauX »

Heya,

Really poor seeing today. I struggled to get anything useful, even at smaller scale, the variable seeing was so rough I could barely do much with it. But, the sky was clear... so, I was tempted to just risk it and sweat away in the heat box to get something to look at. I rarely get an hour of cloudless skies in the summer around hurricane season, so I guess I'll take the poor seeing over having cloud cover all day!

Animations:

84 minutes reduced to a few seconds time lapse (video, AVI, see hosted on Flickr by clicking the image):

Noticed an odd reflecting object (undefined shape) that is clearly reflecting HA light off the disc and near a prominence (video, AVI, see hosted on Flickr by clicking image):

Proms at large scale (very poor seeing, scale was too large):

Nice, too bad the seeing did not cooperate.
The reflection could be the reason the solar observatorium closed. Or a detached prom that is blown away. Or just a reflection somewhere in the optical train. My 50 cents would be on the latter.

That is weird!! what is the timescale of the movement of the hydrogen ball?

Your poor seeing is my good seeing, you can still see very defined spicule spikes on the edge. For me that is good seeing, bad seeing is a complete round edge ;)

The time scale on that weird orb is less than a second. It continues all the way to the right edge, but I lost some of it due to writing buffer issues during that particular moment so I just kept the best uninterrupted chunk of frames that showed it. I see them sometimes. I'm used to seeing satelites, birds, bugs, etc, they are all black in front of the disc. But sometimes I see these weird undefined shape orbs zipping past, and their speed makes me think they are satellites, but when they light up like this in HA, it makes me wonder if that's simply the reflection of HA off a surface of a satellite (such as their panels or foil siding?).

Thanks all, :bow

Very best,

If it was that short then it was probably a pollen grain.
