December 29th - Ha Sun

Post by MapleRidge »

Good day everyone...

The fall of 2018 has been one for the record books with overcast skies and above normal precipitation making harvest of the corn and soybean crops a massive challenge and astronomical activities have not fared much better. I was fortunate to have the skies clear at noon and had a short window to grab some images before the sun tracked too far west to be seen from the observatory.

My first views through the LS80T (DS with the LS75 etalon) showed a small area of activity near the mid disk, some filaments and a few small proms. I grabbed full disk images which made the filaments and active regions stand out very well against the disk, and the proms came up nicely as well. I boosted the exposure and was surprised to see a rather large, fain prom near the southern limb that seems to have a lot of details. Seeing was terrible with no snow and -8C temps, which made higher resolution images very difficult.

The full disk images are shown below:

The image below was made form long exposures to pull up the faint prom in the south

Due to the poor seeing I used the 3x tele-extender to boost the focal length and get a little more resolution for the LS80T/LS75FHa system, starting with the un-named AR:
3x_LS80T_LS75_124657-ASI.jpg
3x_LS80T_LS75_124657-ASI.jpg (504.21 KiB) Viewed 2000 times

3x_LS80T_LS75_124657-ASI-fc.jpg (586.79 KiB) Viewed 2000 times
The next covers the SE quadrant of the disk where the filaments were located:
3x_LS80T_LS75_124759-ASI.jpg

3x_LS80T_LS75_124759-ASI-fc.jpg (581.53 KiB) Viewed 2000 times
Attempts to grab decent images of the proms did not work out, but I was happy to get some decent images of the disk activity.

This will likely be the last session of 2018 based on the weather forecast and look forward more activity in 2019.

As always, questions and comments are always welcome.

Brian

Very nice work Brian. The large filament turned out extra nice.

Thanks Mark :bow

The scope can pull off some decent moderate resolution images with a 2-3x barlow, even when the seeing is poor.

Hi Brian: I was actually thinking about you maybe imaging also when I was out in the sunshine yesterday... great job, you pretty much captured everything that there was to capture and in great detail. All images are beautiful, but I particularly like the large filament close-up and the circle of fire.

Maurits and Franco...

Many thanks to each of you for the feedback, its always appreciated :bow

Franco, I almost missed the chance to image yesterday...we had cloud most of the morning and when it started to clear off the south stayed obscured with a lot of moderate cloud cover. When we finished lunch I saw the shadows sharpen up as the cloud cleared so I ran out to get started before the sun moved too far west to be observed from the observatory.

Hi Brian,

Excellent series of images despite seeing. I especially love the image with DS and 3x teleextender.

Thanks for sharing.

These are great Brian, I particularly like the one of the filament, there is very fine detail and I can see an almost 3D effect and could imagine what it would look like as a prominence :bow

It has been thick dark clouds for more than a week now, no rain, just cast iron grey. So bang goes the hope of using all these late nights to do star trails etc. Back to work on Wednesday so I bet it will turn sunny again then ;)

Thanks for your comments and feedback...always appreciated!!!

We have had a few clear breaks over the past couple of weeks, but not much opportunity for me to make use of them :( Besides this set of solar images I did have a few clear evenings that allowed me to get out and try to get pics of the comet and a few wide field shots of the winter constellations to show at the next astronomy club meeting to help the novice members find their way around the sky.

Hope you get better observing weather in 2019!
