CaK set-up and first try, 20012019

Post by bart1805 »

Today first try of the CaK set-up and the Ioptron CEM60.
I mounted the 40mm on top of the 100mm ED f/9. Here is more about the dismantling of the PST CaK's.

The CEM60 is a pleasure!
- much easier to carry into the garden than the HEQ5 on the pillar mount.
- slew to target, sync to target and the tracking was almost perfect.
- much more stable than the HEQ5.
- silent!

And the first try of the CaK doublestack based on two PST CaK's. Was struggling with the filters. First I tried this:
Baader Blue - Beloptik UV/IR cut on KG3 / Baader CaK filter mounted in two separate filter cells / PST #1 / PST #1 / ASI290mm
Could not get a clear image. Using just one of the Baader CaK filters did not make a difference. Then I removed the Beloptik filter, and that was the solution for now. So here is the first image with this set-up:

Shutter: 10ms
no gain, no gamma applied.
Autostakkert, stacked the best 15 images
IMPPG:
LR deconvolution: Sigma 1,0500; Iterations 50
Unsharp masking: Sigma 1,400; Amount 1,400
Gamma: 0,8

Thanks for watching!
CS, Bart.

Very nice indeed :hamster: how did you manage to find 2 CaK PST's, I have struggled for years to find one.

Thanks Alexandra. I posted a "wanted ad" on a Dutch site. Within a couple of days I got 2 offers.

Nice capture Bart. I'm sure I remember Apollo saying a similar thing about the Beloptik with CaK.

Thanks Mark, I thought he said that when you used the Chroma filter there was no use for the Baader CaK. But don't remember exactly.

Thanks Eric. It was freezing cold, sun was about 17 degrees high, but happy to be able to test both the CEM60 and the CaK doublestack.

It works well Bart. You can just about make out the 'double limb' on the full size image. With the sun high in a deep blue sky you will get proms and disk in one shot easily.

Tried to work a bit more on the picture. This time in PS. Double limb is a bit easier to see. Processing CaK is difficult, very easy to proces it to hard.

Hi Bart...

The CaK image looks very good, and the imaging setup look equally impressive!!!

Very nice, Bart. When you say, "Baader CaK filter mounted in two separate filter cells," do you mean the Baader K-line filter, with the two filters separated into two cells? If so, I am curious why the separation. To change tilt?

I did Baader CCD Blue -> Baader K-line (pair in original cell) -> single PST#1 and got a very nice image given the camera (R2 video).

Hi George, thanks and yes, you are right. I was not precise enough: it is indeed a Baader K-line filter. Yes, I separated the two filters into two different filter cells. The reason was that I had to much reflections going on when the filter was properly stacked in the original filter cel. So now the distance between the two filters is bigger and now it works better for me.
Still a lot of experimenting to do. Just measured the filter stack and I think the distance between the K-line filter(s) and the sensor of the ASI290 is too big. Shutter was 10 ms, will apply gain next time to bring it down to less than 6 ms.
CS! Bart.

Nice images and setup, Bart. Looks very promising. Good luck with your further optimisation trials.

Interesting idea, I will have to give it a try myself.

I got the idea from another discussion on this forum, so he (or she) deserves the credits.
