Hi everyone...
The clouds parted late in the morning and produced a sunny afternoon here today, but a bit on the cold side...was -19C when I went out around 11am to clear snow on the driveway and around the observatories:
We missed the winter storm that hit with far more snow to our south along the west end of Lake Ontario, and the few inches we did get was blown around by the strong winds. We haven't had this much snow since late November and below are the views after clearing paths to the observatories:
I ventured out to do a few solar shots after lunch, starting with full disk Ha through the LS80T/LS75FHa double stack with a B1200Ha blocking filter. The images below are composites of separate disk and limb frames, with an inverted limb use don the second image:
The disk was very quiet with minimal features, but with the nice weather I popped the 3x tele-extender in and tried to see what would come up with a little more resolution. A two frame mosaic of the eastern and western disk is shown below in several palettes:
The last attempt at images was the small proms, with the most promising groups on the SE and NW limb. Seeing was not great and long exposures were needed (even in 2x2 binned mode), but they turned out a little better than I expected:
The day managed to warm up to -17 or so, and once finished at the scope I spent most of the day by the fire :lol I had to take a few trips out to get more firewood and below is a short video taken just before sunset showing the ground drifting that went on all day and into the night:
The eclipse will be a cold one tonight with a -29C forecast to be the low, but don't think it will be quite that cold mid eclipse. The low usually hits just before sunrise but time will tell.

A very nice, cold set, Brian. Thank you for the views. Starting to see the beginning of the eclipse right now. Hope you have a good view too.

Re: January 20th Sunshine
Thanks Franco, and just in form viewing and photographing the eclipse. Very pretty to see the brightly frozen, snow covered landscape fade away as the eclipse progressed. It has been years since I had a clear view of a total lunar eclipse, so it was great to get clear skies for this one.

Derek and Alexandra...
Thanks for your comments and feedback on the images and scenery...always appreciated
We really haven't had much 'traditional' winter weather so far, so this cold spell hits everyone pretty hard.
