January 26th Session

Post by MapleRidge »

Good day everyone...

The weather was calling for clear skies today and things looked good at sunrise, but clouds rolled in soon after dawn though the satellite images still showed promise. The clouds cleared mid morning while I was in town getting groceries and stayed clear until I got home. I had about an hour of observing before more clouds set in around noon hour. This allowed me to grab some full disk and close-ups of AR2733 before shutting down. The clouds timed it right as I had to pick my mother up in the afternoon and take her to the hospital to visit my dad who had surgery on Wednesday (he's doing well). The short session allowed the image processing to go quickly once home at supper time and able to post quickly!!!

Starting off with the full disk Ha images taken through the LS80T/LS75FHa+B1200Ha double stack solar scope, these are composite images form separate disk and limb exposures with the limb inverted to highlight the proms. There were many proms but they were small and faint, but AR2733 made up for it.

The images of AR2733 were taken through the modded CR-150/DSII/B1800Ha scope with a 3x tele-extender ahead of the camera (ZWO 174MM). I selected one image with the pressure tuner set at 10PSI, 15PSI, and 20PSI as the Red Wing, on-band, and Blue Wing which are shown below. It has been a while since any AR's showed much activity, and the ellerman bombs in the wings were nice to see again (most evident in the Blue Wing image but some in the Red as well). There are mono, inverted, and colourized versions of each:

I missed making a new flat for the Blue Wing images, so the FOV is quite un-even!

The small proms required rather long exposures and the seeing did not permit much of value to be recorded. The SSM was running between 4-8 most of the session so I'm not surprised.

Questions and comments are always welcome,
Brian

A very productive imaging run Brian. Interesting to see the off band shots too. How low is the temperature where you are? We're hovering a few degrees above freezing with no real signals of winter other than on the mountains.

Hi Mark...

Thanks for your comments...always appreciated :bow

As I look out across the fields this morning, we have a lot of fresh snow through the night (and still snowing) with a strong wind creating whiteouts, and a little milder than yesterday at -10C.

Our weather has been all over the place, currently back to cold (-12C yesterday when imaging) and it was -27c or so last Sunday night after the eclipse. It stayed cold through to Tuesday then warmed up to +5 on Wednesday with a big snowfall while it was still below freezing then rain once it went above. Then it plunged back into the deep freeze and now there is ice everywhere and calling for a lot of snow the next week or two. Most of November had an early snow cover (earlier than usual), but that melted away and December temps bounced from above to below zero every few days but no snow. It allowed a lot of the unharvested crop to come off once the ground froze and equipment could work in the fields without getting stuck. Week ahead is to be cold with snow...but as I tell the people bellyaching about the weather...its January in Canada, its supposed to be like this ;) If it were July I'd say they had a point to complain.

A very nice session in challenging weather, Brian. You have a great amount of detail in the H Alpha close-ups...

Best wishes to your dad.

A fantastic set Brian, I really enjoy the full disc showing just how grand a scale this active region is, especially for minimum. I also think the blue wing image is a great too, you should wait 10 minutes then take another shot and compare the two, this will really show up which are the Ellerman bombs

Eric, Stuart, and Alexandra...

Thanks for all the feedback, it was a treat to see a change for the blank disks of late!!!

Good point to repeat the images for Ellerman bombs to ensure they change...I'll keep that in mind on milder days  Actually my session was ended due to clouds and need to visit dad or I might have had repeat images.
