Today's Proms & Limb Filament, Full Disc, HA | March 13th 2019

Post by MalVeauX »

Heya,

Woke up to total cloud cover again. So, good seeing was not an option. But, late this afternoon around 1pm, the sky cleared up. Seeing was poor, so I could not support a large image scale. I stacked reducers to lower my scale to be able to do anything in the poor seeing. But managed to get some data worth processing into images. There's an interesting filament and plage area on the limb rotating out of view. Mean while, there's also an interesting new plage area with some fair prominences rotating into the view. Included some small plages found mid way on the disc.

Great setup and captures.

Our students saw that proms on a C8 fitted with an ARIES D-ERF + PST etalon + x2 barlow + ASI224MC. Previously they had seen the view on the same setup with an ASI 174MM. Here is a single frame image of that prom (I hope you don't mind showing this image on this thread).

Not that impressive as a single frame, but the students were thrilled to see the close-up live video of the Sun in colour.

No problem, always love knowing people are doing it themselves!

Maybe you can share any advice on how you used the PST etalon with the C8? I tried inserting a PST etalon with their collimating lenses and the black box attached in a Stage I mod, but I just couldn't find focus with it. This is with a C8 Edge HD. Not sure it is even possible or if it's the same or not the same as a standard C8. But was trying it just to see and evaluate the etalon on its own for re-purposing.

Very best,

Hi Marty,

Sorry that I didn't reply earlier. I was too busy and didn't monitor solarchat.

You mentioned

I used an old C8 (from a Nexstar 8). The PST etalon is placed (Stage 2 mod) immediate at the output of the C8. Valery had advised me that the PST etalon should be as close to the output of the C8. This is my setup:

I have not tried it with a C8 HD.

Thanks Alfred,

What adapter did you use to thread it as close to the cell as possible? I have the AOK Swiss adapters, but I have to insert it into a 2" visual back to do that, which probably costs me some distance.

Very best,

Thanks Alfred,

So likely, I won't be able to, I think the Edge C8 has a different focus range than a standard C8 due to its aplanar lens element. Too bad. Would have liked to test it.

Very best,

Hi Marty,

I have a C8 Edge HD. Because of this same understanding (that I will not be able to achieve focus when using PST etalon), I have not tried it. Maybe I will do it just out of curiosity. Will PM you when I get to do it. Your images with Quark are amazing. I will consult you when I get to experiment with the quark. Take care.

Alfred
