Sunday Sunshine - 17th March

Post by marktownley »

Weather forecast was for hail and thundery showers for today, however as is with such unstable air streams the day will start off bright and clear before all of a sudden the clouds bubble up with force. I was out setup and observing by 9am.

First off I went to the blue end and got some CaK in as I knew the seeing was only going to go downhill through the observing session.

First off the full disk, 60mm f15, homebrew CaK filter and the PGR GH3 ICX814.

I tried some closeups with the 100mm scope somewhere over 2000mm fl with the PGR CH3.

At the other end of the spectrum it surprised me how much there was to see when looking closer in Ha. First off the full disk with the SM90 and ICX814.

Then popping the Quark in the end to double stack for a look at the filament and plage from relic active regions:

Be sure to double click and view in flickr for the full size images. Pleased to get some sun this morning as it's now just wet again.

Mark

Excellent images, Mark!

Your SM90II telescope looks like a keeper. And works even better with your Quark.

And CaK easily can be even better at about 1.5x larger scale!

Hope a good seeing came back.

Valery

Nice set of images, Mark. I see you were rain/hail dodging like myself.

Nice one Mark, is going to be a pleasure to image with this scope when the weather is better / the sun is more active.

Thanks everyone! I was undersampling Valery, I need to look at a more powerful barlow for CaK, I end up stacking barlows at the moment if I want to get up to >f30 which the extra glass really has an adverse effect on light levels. My 2.5x barlow gives me a annoying ghost at 393nm which rules it out. I need to get a decent 3x barlow.

The weather was awful today after 11am Stu, at one point the ground was totally covered in hail. I do like the scope / camera combo i'm running at the moment, I just need the seeing to improve so I can use some bigger apertures.

Great set Mark. Didn't get chance for much more than a quick glance at white light today unfortunately.

Thanks everyone! Couple of extras here; the other limb in Ha showing a small prom and small plage area.

Was running through my CaK data I shot, this one was by far the sharpest. I will endeavour to get a higher f ratio next time Valery.

Cracking shots Mark :bow I really enjoyed them all :hamster:

We had hail from dawn till lunch, then rain from lunch till bed. I think we were in the horrible Irish sea / Cheshire gap stream :(

Thanks everyone! The adapter plate to double stack my nice 50mm etalon onto the SM90 is scheduled to arrive tomorrow! Woohoo! Looking forward to hopefully getting some clear skies this weekend now.
