Quiet Sun Ha Chromosphere 250mm RCT
Taken last Monday through my 250mm RCT with Lunt 35 etalon and full size Aries ERF.
It took a lot of processing and tweaking to get to this result, which looks much better when viewed at full resolution through Flickr on a decent monitor, although maybe a little dark. At least it shows some spicules and texture within the quiet chromosphere.

I have to thank Alexandra for pushing me to set up the RCT which at the time I thought might be a lost cause because of high level haze. A quick on-the-spot run through processing led me to dismiss the session as the results looked pretty poor and instead we switched to the 150mm mod. Only now, with more time and tweaking, do I think it wasn't too bad after all, although maybe not to Valery's standards
Thanks for looking.

That came out really well Stu, worth pursuing.

Re: Quiet Sun Ha Chromosphere 250mm RCT
Stue,
This result is quite, quite promising. May be a little too large scale. I think that the only way to get better results is to set up the RC more frequently and always start with RC250. With smaller apertures you always be nice.
Wish you more sunny days with a good seeing. And higher solar activity.

Re: Quiet Sun Ha Chromosphere 250mm RCT
I told you it was fabulous!! if you put it up side by side with the image of the quiet Sun through the 150 the difference in quality is startling. You should always try the RCT first, especially when the atmosphere is calm under a high pressure (haze doesn't matter). I always find the third day and onwards in the high pressure is the best seeing.
Keep up the testing and get the little Lunt filter aligned spot on for maximum on band

This is quite good Stu ! I found the processing very well balanced. You just need now to keep the 250 RC ready as often as possible in order to be there for the good seeing episodes.
BTW, could you share a pic or two of the Lunt mounted on the 250 RC ?

Mark, Valery, Alexandra, Christian & Pedro,
Many thanks for your comments, insights and advice. Hopefully there will be more sunshine and something interesting to target over the summer to keep practising and (hopefully) improving.

Here's how I mount the Lunt 35 to the RCT. Not pretty, but it does the job. The thumb-screws allow accurate positioning and alignment.

Re: Quiet Sun Ha Chromosphere 250mm RCT
Thanks, Alexandra. Hopefully we'll get great seeing again sometime soon. I spent some time today realigning using a laser in prep for the next session.Montana wrote: ↑Fri Apr 26, 2019 11:08 am I told you it was fabulous!! if you put it up side by side with the image of the quiet Sun through the 150 the difference in quality is startling. Stu, I too think that is a very good image, all considered and an ingenious setup for the filters. Hope to see more from that scope. It's hard to know when those moments of exceptional seeing will happen.

Re: Quiet Sun Ha Chromosphere 250mm RCT
Stue,
May be it is worth to get a SSM and let your scope track a certain detail on the sun for a long period of time. Then see how many movies were recorded and choose best ones by factors of best, average, poores seeing value? Laura doing the same with her 11" SCT in a white light and her images show that such approach does work.

Re: Quiet Sun Ha Chromosphere 250mm RCT
Thanks Valery.
I've now transferred my SSM from the 150mm/DS Lunt 35 to the RCT. We just need some sunny conditions (and great seeing) to give it a try.

Re: Quiet Sun Ha Chromosphere 250mm RCT
Thanks, Phil. Fingers crossed that we'll get conditions conducive to good hi-res imaging at some point over the summer
