Ha Full Disk 25th July

Post by marktownley »

A hot day today, probably the hottest of the year. Seeing was shot before 7am and I seemed to waste too much time trying to get hi res stuff to no avail. The cameras weren't liking it and were up over 60c. In the end was too hot to be sitting dorectly in the sun so settled for a full disk. Lunt 50 etalon double stacked with the Quark on the ED60 f6 scope, Baader 0.7x solar telecompressor was used with the GH3 ICX916M to get a full disk on the chip.

The sun is far from quiet, despite what Spaceweather.com keeps saying - the filament coming around the limb on the equator marks where we had active regions around Easter time, a small flux region mid disk is also the decaying relics of cycle 24. The active region from earlier in the week has all but decayed before it passes over the limb in the next day or so. No proms today but a few bright points here and there that may be indicative of cycle 25, the northern filament is likely to be indicative of the cycle 25 band.

That's a very interesting disc Mark, I like to see the filaments again :hamster: :bow

It is definitely too hot for hi res work today, have a beer instead :) pity I am stuck inside :(
I look forward to Sunday and the big get together with Brian, I just wish a miracle would happen and the Sun would come out but it looks like the only rainy cold day in 2 weeks, what luck, I think I am cursed.

That's a beautiful full disc, Mark, showing multiple features. Good to see some activity. I read in the NY Times that a heat wave is expected throughout Europe today, with record temperatures. Stay safe !

Hi Mark...

Superb full disk, and even more impressive with the heat :bow

I don't think I've had the cameras anywhere near 60...pushing the low 50's a few times. Even when the air temp is in the -20's they hold on, so that is a testament to their ability to handle the extremes.

Thanks everyone! The cameras in the low 60s was a first for me too Brian, I decided safety first and just packed away in the end.

I finally processed the remainder of the avis I shot; all of them with the HaT, SSM and IMX174 running fast frame were just a waste of time, just soft and like enlarging a picture from a smaller scope. Starting to have thoughts about keeping the HaT - a scope I can only effectively use a couple of times a year is testing my resolve...

Anyway, this shot is the small ar that developed this week before it rotates away, taken with the SM90 and 2x cenax barlow (with the IMX174) - surprised it came out with the conditions but hey ho!

Fingers crossed more sun tomorrow!

OK, looks like another image of the filament on the opposite limb came out - again, sm90, cemax 2x and IMX174. This is the remains of the active region we had doing the rounds at Easter time...

Nice work, Mark. Lovey FDs.

I feel your frustration with hi-res. It’s even more frustrating with nothing impressive to image. We need a nice juicy active region to help us keep the faith.

I think we’re all wishing and hoping for more solar action.

Stu.
