Tuesday Sunshine

Post by Montana »

This evening after tea there was a little clear patch of sky to be able to see the Sun with the PSTs. I was itching to test the Chameleon out on the PSTs so I thought I would take advantage of this small short gap. Overall I was very pleased with the Chameleon's performance and because it has smaller pixels than my DMK41 it showed more close up detail and hence faults with my PST.

What I learned - I need to take a flat field during capture if I can or do some drift as I get Newton's rings in the Halpha. One half of the disc is more blurred than the other. CaK was absolutely fine.

One annoyance was I couldn't get gamma to work? it made focus extremely difficult and an absolute guess. Is there any way to get gamma working on the Chameleon?

I think these are the best full discs I have taken with the PSTs as I don't get pixelation when zooming in, so just what I was after.

I have lots to learn before winter to get the most out of capture and processing.

Nice images Alexandra

Try Imaging in 16bits. Gamma works only in 16bits in some versions of Firecapture with my PGR/FLIR cameras

Glad it's up and running Alexandra, are you using a tilter with the Ha?

You've got a couple of ways to do gamma in fire capture - click on ' screen adjustment', the TV icon on the top row with the zoom settings, or, have you clocked the more cog in control, it may be behind there?

Nice images btw - you got the pore in CaK.

Very nice Ha and CaK disks, and an excellent catch in the late day sunshine :bow

Is the Chameleon the camera you referred to that Mark was able to 'solve' your pixel size wish? Which chip is in this camera?

Thanks guys :) this is the best PST images I have got with a such a large scale for a single shot fast full disc so I am very pleased. I need to work on the post processing flow though when I get more time. I am very pleased over all, just a few things to tweak which I had no time for.

Pedro, I was working on 16bit ser files in Firecapture. I also changed to Flycapture and there was no gamma control there either. I changed to the Grasshopper 3 and I did have gamma control so it was definitely the camera. I don't use gamma for acquisition anyway but I do like it to obtain good focus and also for prominences, it is good to have at least a little flexibility.

Mark, I will have to have a look around as you say, did you have to do this to get gamma control? I wasn't using the tilt adapter.

Brian, yes this was Mark T's Chameleon, see here for chip details http://astrograph.net/epages/www_astrog ... PGCM-31S4M

Kind regards
Alexandra

Hi Alexandra, it should have gamma, the software lists it. I'm a no gamma man myself so never recall even looking for the setting though. The onscreen gamma is accessed here though:

Very nice captures, Alexandra.

I almost always tweak gamma, depending on the particular conditions and target, so it’s definitely worth having it as an option.

Thanks guys :)

Mark I had a look last night and that area is greyed out. It is the fact it is not available in Flycapture either that is the worry. I will try updating the firmware tonight to see if that helps as you are right, in the specs it does say it should have gamma. Oh the fun of Point Grey cameras!

Robert Arnold uses the same camera, might be worth dropping him a message.

You clicked the green tick in the horizontal bar to enable screen adjustment? It will stay greyed out till you do this.

Hi Alexandra
I have the camera and did have gamma control after this fix from bart1805 (from Torsten), but have lost it again recently with a laptop reinstall somehow.
I am not sure if I can get it back yet. Mark's screen adjustment tweak works for me but it may not do what I like, clouds so I can't try it just now.

Hi Robert,

Torsten mailed me a patch this morning and it works! So now you can use the 2.6 beta version and control the Gamma slider. I asked him already if I can mail it to you or if he wants to distribute it himself.

Hi Robert,

One step further. I was trying out different programs to capture images. And in Genikap Astro I found a switch to choose between RAW and mono. Specific for PGR camera's. My thought is that in FC by default you image in RAW format and not in mono. There are some advantages: it is faster for example. But the downside is that you can't control the Gamma in RAW images.
So mailed Torsten again and he thinks that this is the source of the problem. When he is back from his vacation he looks into the source code and will try to make a DLL to download in the 2.6 beta version to try if it is working.

So, the saga continues!
Clear skies,
Bart."

Just had another look around,
I have found the file that Torsten sent but it is locked from me by Google, they have changed their virus protection on attachments and won't let me have it!!!

Thanks Robert, that is really interesting!

I am unsure why it doesn't work in FlyCapture though as it should do so. I am sure I will get to the bottom of this eventually. Steve Ibbotson uses his with Genika to get gamma.

What version of Firecapture are you on Alexandra?

Well I updated the firmware to version 1.12 and it made no difference in Flycapture, still no gamma control even though on the FLIR site it says that the Chameleon has gamma as an added software bonus.
I tried the on screen Firecapture gamma but when ticked it makes Firecapture so slow it is unworkable.

Bart has sent me the new dll for Firecapture 2.6, so I downloaded 2.6 and swapped the dll to Bart's and :hamster: gamma control!!!!!!

I'm ready to go...PSTs

Hopefully the weather forecasts indicate you should have some clear spells this afternoon and evening, and tomorrow afternoon and evening looks cracking for you, so fingers crossed and be optimistic Mark. The wind here is certainly not at all bad, nothing like they forecast.
