Solar Image Processing Tutorials - Step 1
Solar Image Processing Tutorials - Step 1
Hello,
I have put together several tutorials on some of my solar image processing methods. Once I get asked how I did something I find it easier to be able to point ot files and say "thats how". I do not claim to know anymore that anyone else, these are just some of the ways I do things. I have produced tutorials for several years for DSO processing and this is my first pass at these.
This is the first four of an eight chapter series on full disk processing. I have the rest shot but need to finish the edits. I use Photoshop CS5 for these demonstrations.
This is also a test to try and put them on this forum as I normally place them strickly on my website.
This is for those who are interested.

Re: Solar Image Processing Tutorials - Step 1
Excellent resource, thanks Ken! I've just sat and enjoyed watching them over my sunday morning cup of coffee. It's always interesting to see other peoples processing techniques.

The tutorials are really great. I use most of your techniques but with different approaches (eg increasing the size of the disk, selections, feathering and masks). Your method makes much more sense (thanks again). I am looking forward to the coloration tutorials (color mapping).

Thanks Ken!
Sometimes I REALLY like this software. these embedded videos are awesome! AND they take up absoluterly no space on my server.

Hi Ken

For years I have been the tech geek, photographer, astrophotographer and now learning Solar photography. During all this time Robin, my wife, has learned PS. I am so dumb when it comes to PS. NOW, your tutorials are showing me the way and explaining it for PS Dummies.
Thanks Dr. Photoshop!

Oooh this looks exciting! I've book marked this. I have decided the Christmas holidays will be a perfect time to learn and experiment on new tricks as it is usually cloudy for 10 days. All these titles look perfect, I can't wait.

I am happy you are finding them useful. sharing processing methods is one of the most fun aspects of imaging IMHO.
I am currently in the processes of rendering the rest of the chapters and will have them up shortly.

I'll have to watch on my computer. The iPad doesn't show the vids on this site.

Re: Solar Image Processing Tutorials - Step 1
Oh dear! I have just watched them all and I got lost on number 1. I have no idea what a mask is, how you created it or what it was doing? I think I need to watch them all again. I definitely want to do this but I fear I am not clever enough
Replacing the background section, I didn't understand what you did at all. I wish I had more brains.
Let's watch them again, may be after a few viewings it might click.

Hi Alexandra
don't give up, never give up. I'm working on it too. It takes some time and trying, trying, trying and trying again.
I have to work with PS 6.0, which is different, but it should work out in the end. With which PS version are you working?

Re: Solar Image Processing Tutorials - Step 1
Hi Walter,
I bought a very cheap version of Photoshop CS5 about a month ago and I am still trying to get my head round all this complicated stuff. I still have my trusty Photoshop Elements which I used before but that doesn't have mask or layers functions in it.

Alexandra,
You can always do as I did many years ago. Get your spouse interested in PS. It's so much better when you can say, "Can this or that be done? Can this color be more...."
PS has always been very deep. I doubt anyone knows all the ins and outs. I do more accidentally with it then i do on purpose. Robin is very creative and remembers the techniques better then I. My in-laws took a course in it last Spring. The teacher went way too fast for them. Tutorials such as what Ken (Dr. Photoshop) gives are easier for me. He seems to be a great teacher.
As Walter says, don't give up. I actually do more with PS then I admit but Robin is my at-home pro so I can be a bit "male" (lazy).

Re: Solar Image Processing Tutorials - Step 1
Hi Chuck
here we have something in common. My Robin, called barbara, works with PS. I have learned very much from her. At the beginning (2010) we had just that situation, here a little bit darker, there some more color and so on.
Now, after two years, I make it on my own, Barbara can no more catch up with all the specials I got from this and other sites ;-). It so specialized and is so much fun

I think Vimeo went down for some reason! Normally I will upload the Flash videos to my site but this time I tried Vimeo so I could embed them here. Looks like it is back up.
Something I will have to watch!

Good stuff Ken. Lots of stuff to think about and you had already shown me lots of this. I still need work on masks though...
