A blue sky day, but stubborn cirrocumulus clouds right over the Sun this morning frustrated any attempts at long-term imaging (animations), but I was determined to at least get some images the lovely proms that I could see on GONG and occasional gaps gave me some short periods of cloud-free viewing. First off, though, was a quick experiment with a blue 430 nm filter fitted to my Lacerta WL wedge. Removing the neutral density filter gave me a bright image (as you'd expect), which I was hoping for and which I could control using a polarising filter fitted to the nose of my 5x Powermate. The objective was to achieve as fast an exposure time as possible to freeze out the atmospheric turbulence without frying my IMX174 sensor!! Rotating the Powemate/polariser gave a brighter and dimmer image within the range I was interested in, taking the exposure time down to 122us on a 2.5x Powermate and 1ms on the x5. I could probably fine tune this a bit further to optimise. I also had a Baader IR/UV filter screwed into the nose of the Lacerta.
Here's the resulting image after processing:

I then reverted back to a 540 nm Green continuum, again without the neutral density filter, and this time I used a polariser double stack to attenuate the image brightness (it was too bright and out of range without crossing the polarisers). The exposure time was now down to 400us on a x5 Powermate.

With the sky conditions being somewhat variable it was difficult to undertake a proper side-by-side comparison, but I've tried to pull out the best level of detail using each method, so the processing is slightly different in either case. The reasoning behind all of this was really just to work out how to use the wedge with different filter configurations.
Anyhow, back to the proms....
Here's the one that Mark T imaged as a superb animation with the plasma knots.

Oh dear, sounds like your weather was bad up north we have had clear blue skies all day some super images though and worth the patience, the prom looks fantastic I hope it sticks around till tomorrow

I'm getting tires of my jaw dropping open. If I don't compliment someone's work forgive me. Everyone is doing amazing work and I can't wait until solar max if it is this good now.

A really nice set there Stu! The increase at resolution at 430nm is quite noticeable. The other images came out well too. Hope you get a bit more sun today, looks like it will clear up for you.

Great work there, Stu. The granulation shots came out really well, and the prominences are beautiful. Definitely 2.5 hours well spent.

These polarized filters don't cut the IR, so using a UV/IR is a good idea.

Probably the powermate x5 has a factor of x6.5 or f7.
