Mercury Transit November 2019

Post by Carbon60 »

I took a holiday from work today for the transit and then a 250 mile round trip to catch some half decent weather in the Midlands (UK); certainly it was a lot better than my local weather at home, which was under cloud and rain. Even so, the conditions were less than ideal with significant haze and lots of passing grey clouds. Given the changeable conditions, I reduced my SER files to 5 seconds to in order to snaffle the quickly passing best bits. Within less than 1/2 hour the session was over when the sky went really grey, forcing me to pack up before the rain started.

Equipment:
TecnoSky 125mm stopped to 110mm
1) Native FL
2) 2.5x Powermate
3) 5x Powermate
Basler acA1920-155um
Lunt B1800 Ca II K module

Processsing:
AS!3
ImPPG
PixInsight

I missed 'first contact' because of the clouds, but started capturing images at 12:39:15, about 4 minutes in, first at the native focal length of the scope (975mm) then progressively with the x2.5 and x5 powermates.

Here's the sequence.

After days of checking the weather reports deciding where to set up (with the reports changing by the hour!) and with such a short window of opportunity, as it turned out, I was amazed I managed to capture anything at all.

Thanks for looking.

Stu.

I must say Stuart, I really do love the CaK granulation in your close up Mercury shots, I forgot to say that before as I had Mercury on the brain :)

Hi Stu - I have not seen too many transit images - thanks! I saw a Mercury transit many years ago & was surprised (I was very inexperienced) how tiny it was on the Solar disc. Your image brought back very fond memories.
