19Jan20 - First Light C11+ARIES D-ERF+Quark (Animated GIF Added)

Even though the Northeast Monsoon brings many clouds daily during this period there are always gaps for solar imaging. This morning I tried out the C11+ARIES D-ERF+Quark combination. Before I go further, I must thank Alexandria for helping me linked up with a fine gentleman to make the holder for the D-ERF and Valery for various help to set up the quark in good working order.

The setup:


Here is the first image of the morning at 8:30 am local time. I used a unbranded reducer with a 5mm spacer in front of a Basler acA1920-155um USB 3.0 camera. This image is full size, no cropping.

How do you find the image?

The seeing condition went down hill and more clouds filled the sky after that.

That setup holds lots of promise, Alfred. The conditions have to be exceptionally good for optimal results. Nice first-light image though with good contrast and detail that can only improve with better seeing. Glad the cell is working well as I designed it for the machining guy that Alexandra found.

Does have promise Alfred, but I think the seeing needs to be better to exploit its capabilities to the full.

I hope that you can get more favourable conditions to make the most of the large aperture scope...as cycle 25 builds up there will be lots of targets to show its potential.

I found another image taken this morning. I thought it was very noisy and not presentable. Surprising it turned out ok.



I only applied LR deconvolution and unsharp masking processing in ImPPG.

Hi Alfred,

Excellent results. To make them better you need the first is to make several adapters between the reducer and the camera C-mount thread. This will allow you to rise the S/R ratio, to get better sampling, larger FOV and sharper images. The worser the seeing, the longer adapter should be used and if necessary - crop the frame.

What I can specially note is details contrast.

Well done Alfred I think you definitely need better seeing and a more active Sun I have my new PST mod to test, I am sure that will take a bit of working out as well

Thanks for the tips, Valery. I found 2 pieces of 5mm spacers and 3 pieces of 10 mm spacers from my cupboard. I will try them out.

I used the same Daystar Quark with a TPO x0.5 reducer fitted to a 15mm spacer.




Flats shows an increased FOV that requires cropping of the image

Which one do you like better? Cropped image 1 or 2?

I like the cropped version better. It endeed a very nice start.

I'd make several (2-3) more spacers shorter than this one. Then your setup will be more flexible in choosing of a right scale according to seeing conditions and object of interest nature - prominences, dark filaments, ARs, etc. The fainter the prominence the longer the spacer you need to choose.

BTW The flat shows really excellent uniformity of this Quark especially taking in to accout it's very narrow bandwidth.

All shops, including machine shops are taking a 2-week break for the lunar new year holiday. Will probably get the shorter spacers in mid Feb. In the meantime I will be using a brand new CAK Quark and a used Quark from Franco.
