2020-04-13 - Just some disks (CaK/HA)

Post by JochenM » Mon Apr 13, 2020 4:34 pm

Mostly a cloudy day here today, but then in the afternoon it all of sudden cleared up in no time.

A lot of wind though, so I didn't even bother trying anything remotely high(er) resolution. But it was nice to be out to get some fresh air and a bit of sun.

Setup:

HA: Lunt LS50, IMX178
CaK: 80ED f7 (stopped down to 60mm), IMX174

Hi Jochen,

Very nice but blank. I can not open the roof as the wind is too strong ... 70 km/h gusts

Thats a nice set of images there Jochen!

Just as a thought, why don't you use the IMX178 for CaK full disk? Those 2.4um pixels are much more ideal for the f10 of your CaK setup, the IMX174 really needs to be operating somewhere around f25 to get ideal sampling. You're really undersampling with the 174 on the CaK disk and loosing detail as a result.

Thanks guys.

Mark, that’s a good point. I just reviewed that and you’re absolutely right. Not sure how I got it in my head to use the IMX174 for that.

Will start using the IMX178 next time and compare the images.

When seeing is good you could put a barlow nosepiece on the end of the camera to increase image scale, would be slightly oversampled but with good conditions it should work well.

Just used the calculator and you just miss out on the full disk, but you should be able to do a 2 pane mosaic pretty easy. https://astronomy.tools/calculators/field_of_view/

A beautiful set of images Jochen :bow :hamster: even with the Sun so blank as you say the fresh air and relaxing nature of imaging is a cure for everything :)

A very good series of images, Jochen. Too bad the sun is so quiet.

Superb images Jochen.
They show the latest thinking of another reason why life exists on our earth, the fact that our sun is so unusually stable.
