April 25th Sunshine
Good day everyone...
My Saturday stared out on the cold side, but clear skies and sunshine warmed it into the mid teens (Celsius ). I was able to get some cleanup work done at the house and in the bush in a T-shirt...funny to think that earlier in the week on Tuesday and Wednesday I was scouting wheat fields in a winter coat with snow squalls...welcome to Southern Ontario in spring
The morning was busy with work, but with the 'remote office' I have been working online in recent weeks and was able to spend some time during late morning to do some solar work too. There were no proms noticed visually with the double stack LS80T/LS75FHa/B1800Ha solar scope, but the activity around the old cycle AR2760 was easily visible as were a few small filaments. The preview with the ASI174MM camera showed these features very nicely as well as a few more than I missed visually: The camera was moved to the modded CR-150/DSII/B1800Ha scope with the 2.7x tele-centric (AiryLab)for an attempt at higher resolution imaging. The seeing was slowly deteriorating but I hoped it would hold out. The first images were of the AR that recently rotated on the the eastern limb, presented in mono, inverted, and colourized palettes: Many of the features that showed nicely in the DS solar scope did not show well or at all in the modded scope, so no images of the filaments and the features in the polar regions were only only a hint of the DS view. Here are 2 frame mosaics of each of the polar regions: Although there limb seemed to have very little activity, many small proms became visible in the larger aperture/longer focal length scope. These were hard to get, but these are the few that turned out: The final pic is a series of images taken with different pressure settings in the DSII pressure tuner, showing the change in appearance of the AR as the tuning is shifted from continuum (0 PSI) into the blue wing (17 PSI). Personally, I like the contrast at 15 PSI, but I'd be interested if there are any thoughts on which is the best to call 'on band'.
Back to work here...take care everyone.
Brian

Brian,
My favorite one is the first one. The full-disk image. All are well done though. Be safe and stay well.

Re: April 25th Sunshine
Nice set of images, Brian. And those sound like a bit more manageable temperatures as well
Regarding the pressure tuner settings. I tend to agree with the 15 PSI setting being the best one. Although the 12 PSI one also looks very good (depends on how contrasty you like it I suppose).

Hi,
For me at 15 PSI you are almost perfect in band IMHO
¿ Does this change when it is colder or warmer ?

Re: April 25th Sunshine
James, Jochen, Mark and Rainer...
Thanks for everyone's comments on the images, and feedback on the tuning
I have always figured 15 PSI seemed to be the best setting on the modded scope and it seems to hold by popular opinion too The pressure is not consistent across etalons, as I find the primary etalon in the LS80T is happy in the 10-12 PSI range but I seldom use the remote tuner (with the PSI readout) on the smaller scope.
Rainer, when the remote unit is working it automatically adjusts the compressor to keep a steady pressure in the etalon. If I use the manual tuning I don't see much change if the temps move 5+/- C, but it needs a major adjustment in the winter if the last day it was used was significantly different than the current day. I might observe one session at -15C and the next is closer to 0C, or vice versa.

Re: April 25th Sunshine
I really enjoyed these Brian, what beautiful spicule detail you get at the disc edge in the prominence shots and the pressure tuner test is great, I was fascinated by the blue wing details in the AR. We so often forget to study the wings and see the arch filament foot points and possible Ellerman bombs. But yes, I agree, 15 looks the best to me as well

Thanks for your comments Alexandra...much appreciated
I like the tilt/pressure tuned etalon for the wings since you don't have to wait and wait like you do for the temperature controlled units to re-tune and stabilize!!!
