My first love (C11 30th May)

Post by Montana » Sat May 30, 2020 11:00 am

This morning I was out and set up early by 08:15 BST and went back to my first love...

Could I replicate last years white light at 5x Powermate, oh yes I could. I had 30 minutes of pure heaven watching the video feed. Like normal they don't quite stack like the video but this for me is pure delight. I could do WL forever :)

I then bypassed CaK (still nothing from Televue apart from "we are working on it" so went to the PST mod. Seeing was immediately worse and these were taken with a 2x Barlow. Still happy though but not the detail Valery or Alfred get. But I certainly can't get that level of fluffiness with the PST or the Solarscope :)

Gave up and moved onto the Solarscope at 9.30am but seeing wouldn't even support 1.6x by then at 100mm :(

I seemed to be learning my new seeing. Pre housing development I would have beautiful seeing from 8-11am. Now it seems I have good seeing between 8-9 only, then very bad, then it gets betterish as it comes over trees at mid day. So basically I need to image between May-July and try and squeeze everything around maybe 7:45 (if I can get up quicker) to 9am. Pity I have lost my field :(

Impressive granulation details, Alexandra, H alpha is good too considering the seeing.

My best hours for imaging is from sunrise to 10:00 am in spring and autumn, summer and winter are worst seasons for solar.

These are amazing! Huge leaps forward. Both the WL and Ha are lush. What blocking filter are you using with the PST mod? The single stack or double stack from solarscope - which ever gets the most light through is the one to use, keep exposure short. I knew the seeing was being the badly behaved creature in all of this for you, but you have your window now and know when it is. Urbanisation is not our friend in solar.

The boss is putting in official garden ornamentation around my new 'pad' today, and I will move my scope later on this afternoon. I should gain an hours extra good seeing from it, my seeing goes to plop around 9am where the scope is now.

Really really pleased for you! :band :hamster:

Thanks guys, I really do love the Sun when this happens, it is like a drug rush :)

Mark, I always use the single stack blocking filter with the PST mod, I know this is darker but I feel the band is slightly better, maybe I am wrong and should do a comparison. I just feel I like it better.

I need a good spot on the Sun now :)

Comparison is probably worth a go. I trust this afternoon will be a celebratory wine or 2 in the sunshine?

Those all came out quite nicely, Alexandra.

Looking forward to what the HA will look like when/if you manage to catch some decent seeing.

Hi Alexandra,

Those WL images are sublime! Mine end up too granular/bead-like. You’ve inspired me to try WL imaging tomorrow morning to see if I can get anywhere close to yours.

Just a couple of prom shots from me today, which I’ll post later.

I love some good white light granulation. Something weirdly satisfying about a clean disk. I got so wrapped up in Ca-K this morning I forgot to do white light.

Alexandra,

All are great but the granulation is utterly impressive! Incredible resolution. The spicule fur shows well too. The sun looks as furry as a cat. Was you at full aperture or stopped down a bit?

Hi Alexandra,

Your images are refreshing and inspiring, especially the WL images. Thanks! I will go onto the WL and G-band after experimenting with extenders and Powermate x2.5 in CAK!!

My initial images using the C11 H-A with PST mod are similar to what you have now. I look forward to seeing more HA images.

BTW, did you use flats for the HA image?

A quick update: I was able to reduce the effect of the brightened area in CAK using Powermate x2.5. However the image quality was also degraded. I am still in the midst of tinkering. Will post some images later.

Alfred

Wow, great images, in spite of the trials of urbanization! Every time I see images done with c8's or c11's I get the urge to pull the trigger on an aries ERF. So far I've resisted since I also like to eat, but one of these days, lol.

Great processing too, I'm still learning on this front. Some of my images seem to take very well to colorization, and others seem to reject every effort, in spite of very similar acquisition and processing. Haven't nailed down the reason why yet, but there's always more to learn!

Thanks everyone for all the kind words :)

Mark, celebratory G&T in the side garden in the shade watching my fussy sparrow check out their new residences (we keep moving them as they never seem perfect enough for the fussy women).

James, these were both at full aperture.

Alfred, yes I did use a flat and I chopped off the right hand side of the image which was off band as recommended by others.

Ammonthenephite, honestly, you don't need to eat  just drink! well, I give the hubby plenty to drink and then slip in a comment on what I really probably could do with next

Hi Alexandra, those two "porridge" images are quite fantastic and the other images are really great too - very well done...

If I could fit a C11 into the observatory, I would, but even though some years ago I had the opportunity of getting a similar scope, it would mean that the observatory-roof would neither open or close - without having to remove it from the pier - every time...

The Tri-scope assembly doesn't suffer with that problem as long as I park-it properly and watch for any changes to the camera-attachments !!

Best Wishes for more fab images from you
Regards
Terry

Gorgeous! I keep forgetting to try whiter light. I only have solar film (Baader). I don't even remember what to use after that, I suppose a 12nm or UV IR CUT.
