Regarding the processed images; it's always gonna be a matter of personal taste really. Out of the three, the first one in the post above is probably my favorite (although the other two are excellent as well).

Ellerman Bombs are tiny micro-flares. Still much bigger by many magnitudes compared to any nuclear detonation on Earth.

Jochen - I prefer soft images but sometimes I add some more sharpening, like those done by Eric to bring out more details.

James - Thanks for the concise description of Ellerman Bombs, it remains us again about the tremendous energy the Sun has.

Alexandra - the Sun is really a beautiful living thing which amazes us with astonishing features. I have sort of optimised my C11 HA setup. It is really weather cooperating and being there at the right moment. You are making good progress with your CAA HA setup. Expecting to see great HA images soon.

I would like to share more information about the settings for the video recording:

I set the aperture to 5msec and push down the gain as much as possible to prevent saturation of bright spot. This is how a single frame looked like:


It may look dark at time of recording but it gave me the details I want to capture. The other settings:

Gain : 22018 Gamma : 3.34 on the Basler acA1920-155um USB 3.0 camera
Best frame had a 56.4 quality number in AS!3.
I chose to stacked 1000 frames out of 3000 frames recorded. At the 1000th frame, the Q number dropped to 48.3 (or 48.5%)

I have discovered that I don't have to stack the best 75%. In this case I stacked the frames from the best 50% and the resultant image was ok. I must add that I made 4 recordings that morning and this was the best. The others were poor. Shows again that seeing plays a big part.

This imaging session clearly showed that seeing can make a big difference in the quality of image captured. I have attached a picture showing a good recording made at 8:31am local time and a poorer quality image at 8:43am.

I was told that one way of ensuring that only good recordings are made is to use an SSM to trigger the recording when the seeing is better than the set level. I have yet to do this.

Currently I make a minimum of 4 recordings when I have good focus and stability in image quality (visual assessment on my notebook computer screen) to ensure that I have at least 1 good one. On good days, I have about 70% good recording. On 11 June, I only had 1 good in 4 recording.

What kind of "success rate" (with SSM) do you normally get when doing Hi-res imaging?
