The Sun - 12th July 2020

Post by David_The_Bears_Fan »

A bit late posting these for a number of reasons (busy Sunday + my laptop seems to have develop an aversion to connecting to our router all of a sudden). Yesterday was the first decent session with both the Quark and the Evostar 120. Although the seeing was quite variable at times at least the winds had dropped so I could use the big scope. I spent quite a bit of the session just visually working through different combinations of barlow, aperture mask and Quark settings to try and get the best views and then plugged the 178 in for a whole lot more fun. First few images below plus the usual Ca-K disk and a bit of white light as well. Second shot is clearly suffering with Newtons Rings although the first image is much better. The first image was shot and processed using a separate flat field file / capture whereas the second was shot using Fire Captures built-in live flatfield option. Need to experiment further with this. I'm reasonably pleased with how these came out for a first session, with time and effort these will improve over the coming weeks and months....I hope!

Those are wonderful views of the spicule layer on the solar limb.

Nice results, David.

I have newton rings by default on my Quark as well. Tilting the camera very slightly (probably the least amount of tilt I can set the adapter to) eliminates this completely.
