Language

Post by swisswalter »

Hi solar friends

I love you all, but how on earth can I learn your language, if you use different spellings for the same word. For example: in my language it is written "FARBE" in your it is sometimes written color and sometimes colour.

I did notice, that the solarfriends over the big pond do use mostly the short version "color" but the young ladies from england ;-) use colour.

@Stephen: in that low-res forum, they used to have a "spelling check tool" , they don't have it activated any more, would that be something for your "our" forum ( I know I'm the only one here, who's mother language is not english

Walter, your English is fabulous, absolutely fantastic and I have never not understood you. I get the spelling check being a red wavy line underneath if it is spelt wrong, perhaps as you have a German setting it doesn't recognise the English.

With regards the spelling, I speak English, the others speak American

I am currently trying to learn Swiss French from my colleague at work, but somehow I think he is teaching me things I shouldn't be repeating in French!

Kind regards
Alexandra

Well down here Walter we speak "English" but if I was to use all the local colloquialisms(Australian Slang)it would be very different. For example"Took a squiz up, what a pearler cop this" would translate into " Had a look at the Sun today it was magnifcent, here is my rendition of it."
Not only is your English fabulous but I always enjoy your sense of humour.
Cheers and merry Christmas
Derek

Walter, the English and Canadians use extra letters "colour" instead of the "color" we in America use. I guess we don't have the patience the English do to write our words. LOL

I also understand and enjoy your posts. Here and in the OTHER site.

Hi solar friends

thank you very much for that encouragement. I will cancel my english lessons on the local school and give them instead an outreach day ;-)

Walter, the most common commonwealth usage is COLOUR as in French! As I was thought on Indian English which is a derivative of British English, many times I unwittingly felt there some spelling & grammatical mistakes when I come across COLOR or spellings which use Zed instead of S like authorized instead of authorised. I have tried to correct them to my native English! It has been accepted by some commonwealth countries on usage of American spellings in their local English usage. Walter I enjoy your posts and they are informative!
