Post by JohnW »

Oct 29th 2020, SE Australia.
Managed to get two pics of the Sun this morning before it clouded in.
Both single exposures with a Canon 550d camera of the Sun's SW quadrant and AR 2778.
Orange pic is thru a Lunt 100 Ha (SS) scope and shows some flaring around the sunspots.
Yellow pic is thru a WO 81 scope at 540 nm to show the sunspot group better.
Thanks for viewing,
Regards all, John W.

Hi Everyone, Thanks for the great comments. It is nice to have something on the Sun to image and focus on. Hopefully activity will pick up as we enter the new cycle. Regards, John W.

John,
How did you manage to get those DSLR shots to turn out so well? White light is not so bad but I have never really been successful at getting good shots of the disk detail.

James.

Hi James,
A lot of experimentation to perfect DSLR shots in Ha. I take them in RAW mode and process with MAC computer using iPhoto and then a bit of GIMP.
The DSLR saves a lot of processing time (compared to stacking).
Regards,
John W

I have the hardest time getting a sharp focus with a DSLR in Ha.

James,
I notice you have DS solar scopes - try SS and your view will be brighter and focusing easier. I found DS views too dull to image well when I had a Meade 60 mm scope. Cheers, John W.

John,
I have successfully gotten prom images with both the iPhone and DSLR but disc detail has eluded me. The proms are always in single stack. I am gonna have to play around more with my camera. I have a Nikon D3500. I do intend to go the usb video route as soon as I can afford to get a camera. I gotta pay off my SolarMax 90 first.

Have you ever tried a smartphone camera on solar?

James

Thank you John. Most people paint a dismal picture on using a DSLR for solar. You do show it is possible.
