October 30 2020 Observations

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time is 11:06am to 11:48am EDT local time ( US ). Breezy with partly cloudy skies. Temp is 50F at beginning of session and 52F at the end. Seeing is poor today. :(

Coronado SolarMax II 60 DS. 16x and 21.5x ( Ha )
I can see ARs 12778/9 approaching the SW limb. Their bright plages are easy to see and I can see their spots. Poor seeing obliterates any finer detail. I can also see the disturbance in the NW also nearing the NW limb though I find it hard to see today. I can see only one filament on the entire disc and I had to work at it to see it. It's on the northern part of the disc below the pole. I see no prominences at all. The mottles are of low contrast and at first I could get nothing but a blank red disc before tuning in on the active regions and finally getting them to resolve.

Orion 70mm Solar Telescope 25x and 41.5x ( WL )
Seeing made resolving any fine detail in the sunspot groups of AR12778-9 impossible. Even at 25x the spots were mostly a blur making finer detail impossible. I could only barely separate the umbra and penumbra in the spots. Pores? No way. I did notice a " straggler " spot that I didn't see yesterday. I did not bother trying higher magnifications. I did see the faculae surrounding the groups. And the facular component to the NW disturbance is faintly visible. No granulation seen.

Carpe Diem!

James

And look at the eastern limb in this SDOAIA171 image. Is that approaching activity I see on the eastern limb in two areas!?

Thanks for the report James. Seems i'm missing all the solar action, just rain here for the past couple of days.

Mark,
So far I am clouded out on this Saturday. I hope you have better luck with the weather soon.

James

Great report James, pity the seeing wasn't good but you can't win them all, at least you didn't have cloud :)
