Saturdays Full Disk & Prom Lift Off

Post by marktownley »

My observation window has narrowed to just half an hour now as we approach the winter solstice, however a heavily frosted morning with cloud free blue skies was crying out to me to capture the moment. I started off with a quick visual to get a flavour of what was happening on our star today and then rapidly dived into some imaging to record what I could. Despite the poor seeing through the eyepeice i'm glad to see that avistack and other software have managed to extract all the best bits from my avis.

First off the full disk: taken with the DS40 @ f20 with DMk31, 6 pane mosaic in IMerge.

It was only after I had shot the avis for this and I returned to some visual to end my session that I saw the prom at 8 o'clock position was lifting off. Sadly by this time the sun was back amongst the trees and was too late for another image. However I have revisited the relevant pane and with quite a bit of stretching have managed to pull out this rapidly expanding prom as well as I can. This is presented with an inverted disk just for a bit of variety!

Hope you like and is sunny where you are!

Mark :)

A magnificent couple of pictures Mark, wonderful detail, I'm really glad you saw the sun today even if it were for 30 minutes. I'll post my solar effort in a minute.

Hi Mark

wonderful you managed to see and record the sun. Great shots. We here are under snow. It'll take some time until we see the sun again

Thanks Walter! I've broken up for the Christmas holidays now, so every day for the next couple of weeks, if it's clear at 10.15am I can get a view of el-sol in... I must keep my fingers crossed for clear skies!

Hi Mark

I'm jealous. My boss want's me to work until 24th late afternoon. That's brutal, isn't it?

I was able to image the sun today as well. The image below is a two frame mosaic that shows the prom lift off. Pretty neat. Note, this image is a combination of one set of gain/exposures/gamma for most of the data and a second one for the lift off only. Some non-uniformity due to the combination of lots of data.

The second image is a mosaic of two Barlowed frames. I was going to get more data here but the disk was fairly uninteresting. I'll put more frames together later when things get more interesting.

Enjoy,

Teri

Very nice Mark! I got a quick shot this morning of the prom, and it was really curdled in appearance. In horrible seeing:

Hi Jim

thank you very much. I have only 7 more years to go. I'll survive that, I'm pretty sure
