Ha sun 18th Dec

Post by Montana »

The sky magically cleared around 1pm today after a fairly grim morning. I tried a new theory today of imaging out of the upstairs window, well it was pretty awful. I had pre-cooled the room in hope but really the seeing was terrible due to air currents. I was really surprised that Registax could process them. I think the best were taken at prime focus, I'm still processing the 2x snaps, there was a nice looking beetle on the sun today.

Hydrogen alpha (DS PST):

Calcium K (CaK PST)

and a rubbish one where I tried to do HDR blending, I don't think I am doing this right!

Thanks for having a look at my effort,

Alexandra

Lucky you! Was snowing this morning when I had my half hour solar window so no luck for me today... Regards observing from inside, we converted our loft a few years ago now, and on a few occasions have observed through the Velux window. I found I had better results with just looking through the glass rather than opening the window; yes, there is a reflection you get from the glass but this can be removwed in photoshop: I found with the window open the poor seeing was the biggest limiting factor compared to the window reflection...

They are great images though! 8) I reckon you have a tighter bandwidth with your DS PST than i'm getting with my DS40 comparing your image from today with mine from yesterday. I hope you get many more winter shots from the bedroom window! :)

Those are some really great shots Alexandra. You have in essence a "tower" solar telescope! thats one way to beat a low sun on a cold winters day. You might think about comvering the window with baader turbo film, then there will be no air currents and the seeing will be good. Pouring rain here in Az.

Beautiful work Alexandra! now, why did you deel the need to buy a 100mm filter with images like these through a PST?

I must agree with Stephen these are superb pics. I'm actually thinking of getting a PST so I can get a quick glimpse while at work. I just wish they still did the Cak PST.

Thanks everyone! I'll post a pic of the strange beetle filament tonight, I'll also try imaging through the window next time although I may have to clean it first.

Hey Derek, you could always sprint for a Lunt CaK scope for around $800 american. Or even better, the module is a mere $600 for your own refractor!

Hi Wissixwe, we all have a little laugh sometimes and call features of the sun whatever animal it looks like, spiders, fish, whale tails etc. It's just a strange shaped filament that looked like a beetle crawling, hopefully you will see tonight and have a giggle  It's nothing technical, just a great game, we all have fun here.

Alexandra, very impressed with the solar shot, I cant see anything for at least another two months because the sun is low in the sky and the tree line interferes with my view. Thanks for keeping me updated with your efforts. Steve PS the calcium k is great.
