PST Mod fergling

Post by AndiesHandyHandies »

Hi,

A sunny, scudding clouds and windy day. Blowing the Rumak180 about. Fortunately my 'meat machine' imaging processing algorithm was up to viewing.

Tried out my little bino-viewers first. Saw some RSPhoto quality surface details.

In the 5x could see the whole Sun and quite bright and contrasty.

Realised I am missing a pair of 8x out my set of eyepieces which might be a good magnification.

I just bodged the 1.5A Omega Bobs filter used as a blocker in a tilter at maximum angle to start with. Had a play with it from there to flat and back.

Moved over to the 25mm Clave'. Eventually came to the conclusion maximum tilt was OK.

I tried the CPL and crossed-polarisers. I have seperated the re-collimating lens from the etalon and I had the idea to slide the CPL adapted to a 48mm filter ring into the back PST adapter then held in by the 2" diagonal nose piece with the re-collimator in a plastic Celestron/SW moon filter adapted to it with a Blue Lighting 48mm to 28.5 mm adapter.
A big improvement and no major of axis disks. Still a small close by reflection, I assume off the etalon. And some diffuse circular features now.

Nice view of the one large prom which looked like a chromosome with a fuzzy bit next to it.

Interesting to compare the Rumak180 PST mod to the 90mm with Quark Prom next time the seeing is better.

Cheers. Andrew.

Hi

Scudding clouds, sun and wind. Not for nothing is the nearby road junction is called 'Windy Gap'.

Having played with the blocking filter tilt I have a miasma.

Going to the full posiible tilt without the adjusters falling out washed out the details.
So somewhere there must be an optimum over-lap.
Need a good day to tilt and clock the blocker to get the best result.

I could see the large proms with nice brightness and contrast.

Cheers. Andrew.

Hi

Had a play trying different tilts of the blocking filter.

And all combinations of polarisers.

Got rid of the miasma.

Just a little off axis faint reflection I assume off the etalon. And one faint one half way off, possibly off back of etalon and then blocker.

Nirvana I think now.

Cheers. Andrew.
