Sundays Sun - Ha & CaK - 15th January

Post by marktownley »

I didn't think I would be able to get any viewing in today: early morning high cloud looked like it was going write today off; however just before my observing time slot opened it thinned sufficiently to warrant some imaging...

First off the disk in Ha: Poor seeing gave it a wavy saw tooth pattern both through the eyepeice and also on the cameras live view, the net result of this is that all the spicules and proms were washed away on my 'one shot' images. I wasn't as careful taking my flat as I was yesterday (and knew this at the time but carried on regardless!!) - the result of this is a much more uneven disk than I would like with some hints of newtons rings. Still, this is solar observing in january, and the sun was only 6-7 degs above the horizon when I took these shots, so, I guess I can't be too picky...

Then I thought I would try a go in CaK wavelengths, things are a bit ropey, but given the conditions described above i'm a happy bunny...

I did try a go at a full disk in WL, but I dropped the gamma right down to get focus and then forgot to bring it back up when I imaged, so needless to say this didn't work - doh!

Anyway, hope you like todays offerings!

Mark :)

Both are excellent Mark! try the WL anyway, you may be surprised, surely it can't be that bad? I too had early morning clouds which gave me a worry but then it went lovely and clear, I hope it will stay that way for tomorrow.

Alexandra

Hi Mark

thanks for these full disk shots.

I like the Ha most  (special bonus points for low altitude and short window)

Mark, great stuff. The CaK shot looks like two big eyes coming over the limb.
