Small Post Flare Loops, 1 January

Post by oldfrankland »

Finally got around to processing this sequence of small post flare loops peaking, then fading from view. I did not see the flare itself, the loops were already on the limb when I started observing. Better part of 2 hours represented in the images.

Interesting that loop symmetry quickly deteriorated, the arcade magnetic field lines possibly disrupted by the transfer of material from the top of the loop directly to the chromosphere below [visible in the first 7 frames]. The loops are 1.3 arc minutes tall at their highest, a little over 57,000kms. They may be taller, but no way to be certain because they are on the far side of the limb. Hardly front page news, but rewarding to watch all the same.

wow! a beautiful sequence. By the way, I like the single frames as well or better than all these new-fangled animations that are all the rage...:)

Stunning work Jim! I saw some lovely loops on GONG this morning.
Can I ask what settings you use for your prominence captures as you have such beautiful black background? I had a terrible white haze on Sunday and yet the sky looked crystal clear.

Regards
Alexandra

For me, the frame sequences are a throw back to seeing all those SkyLab solar photos when I was a teenager in the 60s. I really appreciate a well done time lapse movie, and find that both animation and sequence are the most informative -- watching the video, then comparing individual frames. With all the 'new-fangle' bobbles we amateurs now have at our disposal, we can do both....as seeing permits.

Very comprehensive Jim always enjoy your presentations and often use a similar format to record events.
