Solar Lecture By Eminent UK Physicists 20th January

Post by marktownley »

You may remember late november / early december last year I was lucky enough to spend a week at CERN and said we were going to get some of the physicists there to come in and speak to the students at the school I teach at http://solarchat.natca.net/index.php/en ... reach-2012 - well, yesterday was the day this happended!

Our day kicked off with a session on 'The Sun - How it Works' This was a fantastic talk on what the mechanisms are that actually power the sun and what the sun is composed of, then all the maths and physics behind this and the 'proofs' of how we get to what the established theories are. I asked the speakers for permission to share the PDF file they used with you folks here and they are more than happy with this - it is however sat on my hardrive at work atm, so will attach it when i'm back in on monday... Plan was to do some solar observing after this, however as you might expect it was pouring down with rain so this wasn't possible.

We then has a fine lecture on the life and work of Albert Einstein, the notes for it being found HERE!, and after lunch a session on 'Fun and Games with liquid nitrogen' - this was absolutely eye opening and culminated in using the LN2 to make ice cream for all the pupils - very well received!!!

I can't post the pics I took of the day on here - HM Government won't let me do this (without me getting fired!) - however we did have the local newspaper in taking pictures for an article on the day, when these go to print naturally I can show you this, and when we do the write up in our school newsletter i can show you this as it's a 'public' document(even though these are the same pictures I took that I can't post directly! - confused yet?).

Interestingly I found out that both our visiting speakers, Dr Vincent Smith and Dr Peter Ford have both been awarded an MBE for their outreach work in physics, just goes to show the work that people do to inspire young people doesn't go un-noticed! Here's our Peter getting his medal from Betty! http://www.bath.ac.uk/news/2008/1/2/peterfordmbe.html

Will keep you all updated with the sun PDF and pickies in due course...

Mark

WOW! Talk about an outreach event!

That is just awesome Mark! I can hear the CERN visitors now just before they came to your school:

"Wow, Dr. _A___ to Dr. ___B__ can you believe that globally renowned solar imager Mark Townley wants US to come speak at his school?"

"Yes Dr. __A__, says Dr. ___B__, isnt this an honor? I hope we dont screw it up?!?"

I cant wait to see the power point... If the MBE is truly the Most Excellent of the Empire then I will be expecting my invitation to your ceremony...:)

Great Work organizing this Mark, just great!

I can't wait to see the pdf's. This is great and I am sure you are rightfully proud of your part in it. Great outreach.

On a side note...I would pay to see Stephen in Tails and Top Hat. Do they have tails with sleeves cut off to display his Ink also?????? :)

Uhh, I happen to own a set of tails from my former life as a self absorbed, materialistic a-hole. I was driving a custom Porsche 928 S-4 in those days and slaying the ladies...:) What a waste of time and money that was.

I dont think I can look as typically English as this guy but I can try.

After all, I am the heir to the Harry Ramsden Fish and Chips fortune....(not)

My heirs, on mom's side, owned "Estates" in England that they gave up for taxes in the '30's. I could probably pull it off as good as the guy in the pics. Except.....I'd be laughing' at Betty as she awarded this and the next thing would be "Off with his 'ed!!!"

For real tho, I only claim the Irish part as I like to assume my Irish great great great....grandma was raped by an English soldier back in the day. (In truth if grand mum was like me it was her that insisted on the shag.)

Didn't mean to hi-jack this thread but by now y'all got to know that I consider humor as the best medicine for what ails ya.

I shut up now and awaits the pdf's :D

Mark, I really wish I had gone to your school, what fun. You sound like you had such a brilliant day and I really look forward to reading the pdfs and seeing all the news reports.

When are we going we going to see you on the Honours list? now that would be wonderful and would be a just reward for all your hard work.

I had a 10 minute view of the Sun today through the PST (very pretty), it has been worrying me all week. It was back to normal thank goodness, I had about a cm of movement the other side and I could see things clearly again. That high pressure was wonderful for 4 days and was exceptional but it sure had me worried all week. What a relief to be back to normal again. However, I could live without the high winds and rain though.

Regards
Alexandra

Thanks everyone! :) Must confess I felt absolutely shattered at the end of the day, one eye and ear on the talk itself, and the other eye and ear on the room full of pupils.

Glad to hear the PST is 'back to normal' Alexandra, it has been horribly wet and grey all day for me, not anticipating much better for tomorrow either... On a positive note looks like pressure is rising for next weekend, so should hopefully bring colder temperatures and clearer skies - though, this may not meet approval from the tuner on your PST - atleast the sun is getting higher in the sky on each passing day :)

Hi Everyone,

Please find attached the solar powerpoint that was used for the presentation. Sorry for the delay in getting it up here, initially wasn't able to upload a powerpoint, but Stephen has altered the forum rules to make it possible.

Hope is of interest - it was to our students. Article has now come out in the local paper so will scan this and get a copy up too

:)

Attached files Sun3.ppt (2.3 MB)
