Saturdays Smart Sharpened Sun - 28th jan
I woke this morning to high pressure and clearish blue skies which makes a pleasant change! As I was setiing up I could see all the contrails littering the sky and the hint of some higher clouds on their way over. I wasn't optimistic of results as I looked at the preview image in ICCapture - the limb looked to have waves rolling around it and could occasionally see the tell tale signs of this high cloud over the face of the sun. Undeterred I carried on with my captures...
It was only when I saw the pre-processed images that were coming out of avistack that I knew that I was going to be in for a half decent image. Rather than use any wavelets i decied to adopt the smart sharpen method; I had to tweak my usual post processing technique, but i'm finding i need to do less to my images, which has got to be a good thing. It was finished off with a couple of very weak iterations of USM.
This, as usual for my full disks, is a 6 pane mosaic, assembled in IMerge, taken with DS40 @ f21, DMK31 camera. I present the b&w and colour versions; I prefer the b&w but know others like colour so this is shown aswell. How does the colour scheme work for you? I'm colour blind and struggle with 'shades' so critique appreciated...

Awsome full disk Mark, your seeing was obviously better than mine! If you havent allready, try making an action for the USM and smart sharpen, so you can run the macro with any radius you set up any time. Thats how I do it, I have one action for a 1 pixel radius, and one for a 2 pixel radius.

Re: Saturdays Smart Sharpened Sun - 28th jan
Thanks very much guys!
Apollo, ironically when playing around with the final colour image I decided to back off on the vibrancy / saturation a bit - typical eh... :silly:
I've got a couple of actions saved for solar now Chris, they're a useful thing, especially for later in the year when a higher sun and hopefully better weather will allow me to image at a range of scales and wavelengths and I need to claw back time in the post processing stage.
I also took particular care with the flat for this image to make sure it was obtained absolutely dead centre in the disk - aligning east /west first, then north south. This is something I think is critical if you are taking flats, even more so if you are mosaicing with a series of images as a result. The individual panes for this mosaic were perfectly even in terms of luminosity, with no gradient at all. I had to do no dodge / burn as i've had to do in the past.
Doesn't look like i'll be imaging today - have woken to grey skies with the threat of some snow later on

Hi Mark
a wonderful sun disk, so many details in the b/w mosaik. Pleasant color I would not change anything mabe the weather ;-) (all clouds and snowing here too for weeks now )

Great pics Mark I like the B/W best and at least you have some sun.
Cheers Derek

Great work Mark. I think a color opinion is relative to the viewer. I like them both.

Re: Saturdays Smart Sharpened Sun - 28th jan
Well done Mark! I'm so glad you got a view and image from yesterday and a jolly good one too. I love the colour but I would also give it a touch of vibrance. You did one a couple of weeks ago and that was perfect.
I managed to get a view at 10,20am yesterday but I could barely make out that there were 2 filaments and that was about it, it then got worse and stayed a white sky for the rest of the day, a bit like today.
Regards
Alexandra

Thank you everyone for your kind words, I went back to the colour image and added a bit more vibrancy and saturation, here is the result...
