Processing a DSLR image--first try
Processing a DSLR image--first try
Hi folks--
Another online solar amateur sent me a full disk in Ha (jpg) he shot with a Canon 7D. He has never really tried to process an image yet from his DSLR so he asked if I'd give it a try. Being my first time as well with a DSLR shot I said "sure" lol. Obviously starting with a jpg instead of the raw data was not the most desirable method but we work with what we have, right? Anyways you can see the processing flow and results on the below web page---actually came out better than I expected for a single frame at the mercy of the seeing (he caught proms and disk on one shot) and for not having any stacking involved. Anyways for what its worth, enjoy!

Re: Processing a DSLR image--first try
Jim,
I posted a few trials with this a couple weeks ago here. tell your friend to change to monochrome mode and take about 20 shots with very low exposure. Then he can stack them in registax and get some pretty good results.

That is incredible how processing can change an image to such an extent, well done!

Re: Processing a DSLR image--first try
This was my processing routine for DSLR Ha imaging http://www.photosbykev.com/wordpress/ph ... r-imaging/ It worked well for me I don't think switching to mono during capture is the right way to go, in theory only the red channel should capture detail but I often see data in the green channel which can used to improve the final image. Extracting the channels from the RGB image in post processing gives you access to all the data.
Shhoting multiple images and pushing them through Registax will certainly give more detail.

Re: Processing a DSLR image--first try
Well, I'll stick with my DMK but its nice to know a DSLR will work in a pinch!

Well done Jim. I have heard as well you can use the G channel as well when the full red image is blown out.
