And then the Sun came up!

Post by Cschur »

Seeing was maybe 2/5 and slowly degraded as the sun rose from increasing winds. We live on the edge as you have seen of a huge 2000 foot tall red rock plateau (The Colorado Plateau) and when the sun rises, the cold air cascades down the slope and hits payson in a huge seeing smearing wind. Geez. Get the great view, but not so great seeing. Here is what the sun looked like in the 80mm f/6 when it cleared the pine forest:

thanks for looking. Still waiting for seeing like Pedro gets all the time....

Wonderful work Chris! summer will be here soon and I am sure you will have some wonderful Pedro sunshine, did you say for up to 3 weeks at a time?
Any way, you will then have to pity Mark and I and the rest of the UK bunch as we sit helplessly waiting for summer to arrive still by next October

Alexandra

Yes, still nice shots even if the seeing doesn't want to play ball. No sun for me today, only fog as the snow melts. You should have nice weather for the next 2 weekends atleast Alexandra, i'm off to Iceland on an aurora hunt for 1/2 term week, that should make the weather sunny in the UK and naff in Iceland... Usually the way things work... :silly:

Hi Brian

you are so right. Just had a call from John , toronto, asking for some snow and temperature decrease.

He has bought a big snow blower, but has not using even the small one yet he already has had for a year.

Walter...

Well, although it may seem to be warmer and much less snow (and we have had it quite 'easy' in the weather department), I keep assuring people that we will get a blast of winter yet. The days of having snow on the ground from November to late March have been gone here for decades.

I have had to use my snowblower, and shovels...just every time we get a cold spell and snows it warms up and rains, and back to the begining again. We have had a alot of overcast days too, so that adds to the gloom factor!

Hi Chris,
Cracker images Chris !! The load of details is impressive.

Any processing tips for WL processing. I quit WL for while. I will restart when the seeing here gets really better.

Best Regards,

Fernando

Fernando, one tip to pass on is that while taking the image in IC capture, youll want to set the gamma low enough to easily see the granulation so that the image processing program such as registax has something to latch onto while stacking. If the granulation is weak, the registration will be poor and the final stack will look bad matter how good the seeing was. I set mine for a gamma of 40 for the DMK51 which is equal to a gamma of 55 with the DMK31.

which is equal to a gamma of 55 with the DMK31.

I'm normally somewhere around that value with my WL shots, just have to keep it slightly higher when the sun is close to the horizon else the limb gets too dark...
