Feb 27 HA and WL Images

Post by andreahaku »

Hi everyone,

here are my images from today session.

The H-Alpha ones has been taken with the Vixen A80M+PST Mod setup and DMK41 camera (2.25 barlow).

This is the 3rd session with this new setup- Today the sky wans't clear and it was a little windy as well. But I'm quote happy with results. More sunny days are expected and so still room for improvement.

Here they are:

Yesterday I received my new Celestron Omni XLT 120 (120/1000) but was a rainy day. So today is first light. I decided to push it immediately and user my 2" home made Herschel Wedge with the x5 Powermate.

Here's the 1422 in white light.

I stacked them with AutoStakkert2 and the Photoshop for iterative Smart Sharpen, coloring, etc.

Any comment and suggestion is more than welcome as usual!

Andrea

These are fantastic images Andrea! That PST mod is really delivering the goods! Mind you, the white light is pretty darn good too! B)

I agree with Mark, fantastic shots... all of them !! To me, the proms are specially great as it is the WL view.

Great job,

Fernando

Thanks guys.
I'm very happy with both the H-Alpha and white light setup.
I mounted them in parallel. Now I have to "allign" them well so that I have to do almost no move when switching the DMK41 from one to the other ;)

I mount my scopes parallel and found one of these http://www.telescopehouse.com/acatalog/ ... Mount.html really handy...

Very nice. I'll try to see if I can find any "easy" solution with the hardware I have in house. Otherwise I'll start looking for new gadgets. Thanks for the link ;)

I started off with guidescope rings but found the above much easier to adjust and swap scopes over...

Wowww these are nice!!

With the white light I would just tone the brightness down a touch, and also step back a couple of pegs on the smart sharpen, I think this will give a smoother finish. Top shot though :)

Gorgeous images! The coloration on the Ha shots are very good and not overdone. The white light shot indeed does show a notch above my 80mm for resolution, you are starting to really resolve the polygonal shape of the granulation. Is that refractor an APO?

Thanks a lot Alexandra.
I still have to find a good balance for white light. Is a new field for me. So still experimenting a lot.
Your suggestions are more than welcome. I'll try reprocessing them following them ;)

The Celestron Omni XLT 120 is an acro but known to have very good optics.

Here's the reprocessed white light image:

I used less Smart Sharpen steps and less "flashed".

What do you think? Is it better?

Thanks again Alexandra.

I've seen in your Flickr that you reprocessed all your WL images with Autostakkert2! I love it as well and I'm doing all the processing with it since you first wrote the post about it. I'd like to ask you which settings do you use for the processing.

I usually use noise to 4, 30% images and an AP size of 50. I use a DMK41 as well and shot 1000 frames (usually a little more than 1 minute).

I experimented a little with setting and found those to be the best for me, but you have a lot more experience and surely you have found something that can help me improve further ;)

Thanks ;)

Andrea

Hi Andrea,
I usually capture around 1000 images or less for hi res white light for 2 reasons. Firstly, solar granulation changes in around 5 minutes and to get best detail and avoid smearing and getting round blobs you need to be fast. Secondly, I try like a heron to catch a fish, I wait patiently and press the button only when seeing suddenly clears and stop as soon as it goes shaky and really blurred, so this could be after 500 frames or less. You have to have quick reflexes! Perhaps Autostakkert is more forgiving but honestly the slightest wobble from perfect used to send Registax or Avistack to just loose it completely.

Next in the processing, I used noise 3, 10% images and AP of size 40.

I hope this helps a little.

Regards
Alexandra

Thanks for your description.

What I do is take always 1000 frames and then filter the quality of the from inside the software. All the stacking software let you do that. So in reality I take 1000 frames but use only the best N (or N% frames).

My AutoStakkert2! settings are a little different. I'll try your on one of my today images and see how much they impact.

Thanks again for great infos and help ;)

Cheers,
Andrea

I wrote one already:

Is a simple one but you can start with it and then do more elaborated development ;)
