Double Stacked CaK - Full Disk First Light 16th September
It's a sign autumn has arrived here in the UK, the frequency at which I can do solar observations has dropped dramatically with the arrival of the poorer weather, and when the sun is out really surprises me is how quickly the sun is loosing altitude in the sky, still, nothing I can do about it, just make the most of it...
Anyway, an imaging run I was looking forward too; I purchased my second CaK PST at the weekend with a view of making a double stack CaK filter. Walter and myself had been discussing this as a viable possibility for sometime, and then last month and a trip over to Appenzellerland and we were able to test the theory out. The results from his Basler camera and spectrophotometer showed stacking a CaK PST and Lunt filter worked, so I was optimistic my CaK double stack would work.
This shot was taken with the 70mm scope at f6 with a DMK31 camera. Conditions were less than ideal, I was shooting through my open front door, the sun was at less than 10 degrees altitude and there was pretty thick haze.

Ok, so what is this showing? Well, a pair of 2.2angstrom filters stacked gives us a 1.5 angstrom filter. Like a double stacked Ha filter a DS CaK lets through less continuum leakage, as a result what struck me is that the plage and supergranualtion seemed slightly brighter and more evident than normal 2.2a CaK. I've included the last CaK full disk I took from back in august, as think this shows the subtle differences.

I'm looking forward to exploring the possibilities with this filter, and, the weatherman has just given out warmer and sunnier weather for the weekend, fingers crossed!
Hope you like.

Definetly appears to be more contrast. Look forward to more in the future.

Great stuff!
Well done.
You're getting close to being able to work the CaK wings/ core - K2V/ K2R, K3

Thanks guys! I'm really looking forward to trying this out in proper conditions with clear skies and the sun higher in the sky, roll on saturday!

wow this is a fantastic full disc Mark
On the other hand, where on Earth did you find some sunshine yesterday? I'm not forecast any sun until I go back to work on Monday (no surprises there).
Where did you find a CaK PST? I'm still on the look out and nothing on ebay yet.

That's interesting Mark.
Yes, it does look a little more contrasty alright.
Would be very interested in seeing a single vs double PST CaK filter vs Lunk CaK filter for the same day.

Mark, I am seeing more of the bright circles of supergranulation in the DS image for sure, all over the disk.

Perhaps you can talk him down from his ridiculous asking price to something more reasonable.

Re: Double Stacked CaK - Full Disk First Light 16th September
Thanks everybody! As soon as the weather is clear enough for long enough on a weekend, hopefully this one coming, I want to try some single stack / double stack comparisons. I think the combination has some potential, when I really stretch the raw data the filaments are visible. Given how hazy it was when I took the image above i'm optimistic there is better to come in clear blue skies, especially with the 100mm scope in front of it. Hopefully come saturday /sunday we'll have a bit more to look at on the sun than we have this past week or so. I picked up the CaK PST from a forum member, just gotta keep your ear to the ground If I hear of another alexandra i'll give you a shout.

Hi Mark...
Excellent image, and a very interesting mod too.
Due to the scarcity of CaK PST's, will this type of mod work with a pair of Lunt CaK modules, or are the center bands of the PST vs Lunt slightly different to allow the narrower bandpass?
Thanks,
Brian

Hi Brian, absolutely no reason why not, and very easy to do.

Much more detail in there Mark. Look forward to your next comparison . Strange isn't it, only a year ago a retailer over here was giving away Cal K PSTs as door prizes because he could not sell them.

Hi Mark...
I'll have to keep the DS using the Lunt CaK filters as a future project. I am looking to purchase a B1800, but still have the club B1200 in my possession...might try the 2 together if 2 wind up here hmy:
Chris, you project sounds very interesting...looking forward to hearing the details and seeing the results!

Hi Mark
congratulations on that pic. It's the way to go. I'm convinced double stacking the PST filter with the LUNT filter is the solution. So how about turning over your spare PST filter
Me too I hope for some sunshine during the Weekend. My last experiment did cost me the 2" UV/IR cut filter

Oh dear! That beloptik didn't survive then Walter
I'm going to be looking at ERF alternatives for this combination than the ND-less wedge I used, exposure time was much longer than I expected, and this combination could prove difficult to image at longer focal lengths without noise. I can feel some research into beamsplitters happening... Chris, at 0.5a i'm fairly certain this is something you will need to explore too.
