H-alpha SUN (20120226) comparison image

http://re.apaaweb.com/sun_20120226_LUNT ... 55_235.jpg
SUN (20120225) DISK & PROMS. LUNT LS60THa/B1200, DMK41 (gamma 55 left7/gamma 235 right), two-panel mosaic

The two-panel mosaics were obtained with the LUNT60 (gamma 55 left/gamma 235 right).

Final processing was done in PS CS5 (Shadows & Highlights, mask (simulated flat), smart sharp...). Avistack2 and Registax 6 were also used (align and stack).

Hope you like it. The lunt60 is great for these full disk images.

Yes I do like it, a great comparison Pedro! The high gamma image certainly shows more detail, but the low gamma image looks more natural to me. Maybe it is possible to do a less aggressive version on the high gamma disk?

Hi Pedro

great comparison, great result. I would take the disk of the 55 gamma and the disk/proms of the 235 gamme and combine them. Could you do that for us ? Please

Hi Mark:

I also prefer the low gamma image (55) but it does not show everything. The high gamma shot has a Shadows & Highlights to reveal all the details (disk and proms). It's something that I can do in 5 min (both mosaics). Then I can use the LUNT152 for HR in WL and H-alpha. Very cool.

Would you be able to post an unprocessed high gamma image I could download and have a play around with please pedro. Curious to try aother technique on it...

Hi Mark:

The TIFF file is too large. I sent a PNG file (16 bits). Two-panel Mosaic assembled in PS CS5. Enjoy.

Right clik on image and do save as...

Walter:

I can compose the DIKS & PROMS in PS CS5 but it will be not as interesting. I will give it a go.

Hi Pedro

thank you very much. Yes, you are right, the limb is looking a little bit unnatural but otherwise it is a very fine composite

Hi Alexandra:

It takes lots time to assemble the mosaic. As I mentioned before this technique is great to get full disk images in less than 5min. Just have to change the gamma values and move the telescope in DEC. Each avi file with 1000 frames takes about 1min to reccord. OK it will take 6 to 7 min...

Wow, had a go at processing that raw image you posted Pedro - really surprised me how different it was to process compared to my full disks. Needless to say your outcome for it was much better than mine...

Excellent Pedro, thanks for the comparison. I agree mosaics can be very time consuming especially if doing several panels!

show us your result Mark. What I did was:

individual images (staked and aligned in Avistack2). Wavelets in Registax 6

Mosaic assembled in PS CS5

Post processing (PS CS5)
Shadows & Highlights (about 15/90 first menu)
Curves
simulated flat (mask - median filter - difference)
smart sharp 25%
Curves
(...)

I really love the color comp on this set, have you ever tried a quality focal reducer to get a one shot full disk? That's what me and Jim lafferty do...

the low gamma does look more natural. I am playing with low and high gamma shots from yesterday myself. Not real happy with the final product. I was until I saw yours .... great job

Thanks guys.

Yes Chris I am now using an AP 0.67 reducer that produces excelent results. I can use it with the LUNT152 (2") but I still have to do a four-panel mosaic. With the DMK51 it's easir to get the full disk in one shot.

Pedro, they are booth great. Obviously the high gamma shows a lot of more information, specially on the limb and prominenses, but the low gamma mainteins a better tridimensionality look (and the contrast looks wonderful too).
