Article in Astronom Magazine Posted Online

Post by Cschur »

Hi All,

I went ahead and photograhed the article I have in Astronomy in the April issue on a solar system camera and posted it at 2400 size. Below is the 1290 preview, and to see the full size, click here:

Thanks for looking!

Hi Chris,

Very nice article, congratulations my friend !!!

So, you are a professional video broadcasting engineer.. well it looks like we have something in commom in this matter. I am a RF and microwave engineer who always developed stuff for TV stations. Now I still have my company but acting in different markets.

Best Regards,

Fernando

congrats Chris. I found that camera to be unusable for solar. Nice spread.

Stephen, I would not recomend this for solar either, but as part of the complete review process I had to try it.

Lovely to read Chris!

Are you basically saying this is great for live view but crap for taking magazine quality images?

I also have a question but I have always been too nervous to ask before and you will all think I am stupid but here goes.

I've only seen 2 deep sky objects before, Orion and the Ring nebular (took me 45 minutes to find), if you took a 15 minute exposure of them wouldn't the picture just be a blurry mess because of the atmosphere? also tracking is great but it moves constantly (nothing is perfect)?

Alexandra, the entire concept of deep sky imaging is another world completely than solar. Yes in a sense they are limited to around 1 arc second resolution because of the atmosphere, but normally you dont shoot through barlows or high power. A one degree field is normal for most telescope shots. Perhaps you could take a look at my deep sky imaging web site and see what is possible.

That camera was crap for imaging, and honestly I thought it sucked as well for live view. Stick with your DMK, and youll be happy...

Well Chris very interesting. I use that camera (A different brand GSTAR CLR) for live view with a 16" GOTO Dob and the views are very good. Mind you I have it going to a 76cm CRT TV. Being colour it is of course no good for the Sun but I use the B/W version which is a much better product in terms of sensitivity and features. I also use a capture program written by guys who use the camera so again its much more user friendly than the Orion version. Its called Gstar capture. I spent quite a bit of time trying to get my setup up to scratch and feel that these Colour video cameras really work better with larger apertures. Thanks for the review and your perspective on it.
Derek
