Policy changes for CBSAP

Post by solarchat »

this is an organizational update about a couple of changes made to the CBSAP nonprofit policies if anyone is interested.
As a result of my personal income being reduced by 60% in April when I retired from my air traffic controller job, the nonprofit now has to implement a minimum donation policy for any non-school events we are invited to.

This pains me greatly as I cannot say no to anyone who wants to share science but the $60k/year that Natalie and I put into the nonprofit has went away so we have to refocus our efforts and limited resources on the mission of the nonprofit which is to personally take solar astronomy and science in general, to students-4th grade through graduate levels, in an effort to bring new people into the hobby of astronomy and to spark an interest in high tech science.

In order to keep school events plentiful and absolutely free (thats the only way I will ever do this) I can no longer spend over half the budget on giveaway hats and shirts and/or appearances at astronomy conferences. If someone wants us to attend their conference, they will have to either donate something of value to the program so we can give it away or make a cash donation to supplement the costs of these giveaways and conferences and to support our main focus-going to schools.

The big conferences like ASAE, SIA, and others already do this anyway so it won't be any change but the 5-10 requests I get per month to bring the program to different events will have to adhere to the new policies if they want CBSAP to be at their event. It's simple economics. Im not interested in bragging about the program or being well known, I want to get the next generation of adults interested in science.

You, as donors, can review the new policies at http://www.charliebates.org by clicking the left menu first two items for "request school event" and "request non-school event"

Also, we will still support domestic and international outreach efforts as much as possible but instead of supplying everyone with free glasses and stuff we will now give away starter kits to help people get going and then refer them to our supplier so that they may purchase subsequent orders of glasses at the same price we pay for them. In order for your group to continue to receive free solar glasses from CBSAP, you will, at a minimum, need to report at least 5 outreach events to NASA Night Sky Network. using our supplies. This is also not a change to most of the people we support but some people will be affected. Again, simple economics. Exceptions will be made to the glasses policy as conditions dictate.

I would love to hear any comments or concerns from our financial or in-kind supporters as this program belongs to all of the donors here at the Charlie Bates Solar Astronomy Project.
