Refocussing of the program and its goals
The Charlie Bates Solar Astronomy was founded in memoriam to my friend Charlie. The entire purpose of this program, the Facebook page, the Google+ page, the Solarchat! forum, solarastronomy.org and any other activities of this group, is to bring new people into the science and hobby of solar astronomy in order to promote science to young people and the community at large.
I firmly believe that replacing all of the insanity pushed on our youth today with real science, and the means to access it, is the brightest hope for the future of our species. We have got to refocus on science and get away from self absorption, instant gratification, and bling-bling shortcuts to success in this world and replace them with an appreciation, investigation and Earth friendly manipulation of our natural world in order to challenge the frontiers of interplanetary and interstellar space travel.
The only way we will snap out of this egocentric, planet destroying mentality we have developed is to inspire young people to take the reigns and change our human course to one of "outside the box" scientific thinking and achievement. This can only be done by stressing science (Latin for knowledge) over all else at an early age.
Please join me on this page, if you like, in an all out effort in extreme education and sharing the Sun in ways which will encourage more science and less political and religious extremism in our fragile world.
Thank you all for being members of CBSAP and please share this page and program with your like minded friends so that together, we can make a difference. We can't do it alone, or all at once, but we can certainly do something other than ignoring the problem and hoping it goes away.

Hi Stephen.
I was very impressed with the sincerity of your presentation last Saturday at the Lunt Roman Fort
and as someone who has tried for over 40 years to convince his students that 'science knowledge is life-changing' ........ I agree totally with your sentiments.
I hope to get involved with your great programme in the UK

Hi Stephen,
I have just finished watching your speech at Lunt Roman Fort/ Astronomy for Fun. I must say that I am truly touched by your enthusiasm, commitment, and dedication for the Charlie Bates Solar Astronomy Outreach programme and its ethos of trying to inspire the younger generation into science. Charlie must certainly have had a massive impact upon you. I am sorry that i did not have the opportunity to attend any of the events that you were at and meet you in person.
Well done and long may it continue.
Ian

Re: Refocussing of the program and its goals
It's been SUNTASTIC Stephen sharing in just the last few months CBSAP Events from Maine , New Hampshire, Ga with you and here at home Oxford , AL. To just watch someone say " WOW " using the CBSAP Solar Glasses the first time or a kid smile after looking at the SUN through the HA or White Scope. Is a reward in itself and then the parent saying their kid loves science !! The young boy just last Saturday I gave the NASA Sky Network Info & CBSAP Glasses to his mother came back and asked me for a pic with her son. Was a feel good moment saying we struck a cord here !! Looking forward to lots more of CBSAP Outreach and I thanks you Stephen for all your help & support you have given me and others ....YOU my friend are a SOLAR , SCIENCE , EDUCATION , MENTOR WARRIOR !!

Ditto to that, Mark.
Steve, I'm with you on the message. Children's education is absolutely the key to a better future.

I would very much like to ad : "Children's and adult's education is absolutely the key to a better future."

Re: Refocussing of the program and its goals
I agree with that Walter, I work with a chap from Ghana, he is a surgeon/doctor (so well educated) and I just can't believe some of the things he comes out with. I was astounded when he thought my pictures weren't real, he thought the planets and space was a myth spread by western people. He couldn't believe it when I promised him if he came to my house he can look for himself, Jupiter and Saturn are real and you can see it with your own eyes I still get the idea he doesn't believe me yet. I won't go into all the other things I take for granted which were a revelation to him, it has certainly opened my eyes.

Re: Refocussing of the program and its goals
I absolutely agree with you Walter......I've just enrolled on a part-time (distance learning) solar physics course at UCLAN here in Preston, UK.
Alexandra, what you are saying is absolutely remarkable......quite astonishing, really. I wonder what proportion of the global population think this way.

Re: Refocussing of the program and its goals
After 40 years of working with supposedly intelligent and highly educated people I would believe almost anything
The most amazing and frustrating thing for me was that whereas most scientists working in the world of education had some knowledge of literature, art and music; most non-scientists were totally ignorant of even the most basic aspects of maths and science which impacted their every waking second......AND WERE PROUD OF IT.
There has always been an ingrained suspicion of knowledge in this country - a weird view that it isn't cool to be intelligent or hard working - and this seems to apply even more so when the subject being studied is maths and/or science.
I was lucky enough to be involved with developing courses on 'Science for Public Understanding' a few years ago and it was very rewarding to see 'the light go on' when an advanced level, non-science student or intelligent adult first started to appreciate just how much their lives depended upon science; and that science COULD BE FUN
*******---------------- ---------------*******
The good news is that kids aren't born with this attitude (they learn it from parents and other adults) and good teachers can still generate the 'wow moments' that Stephen talks about.
Kids are our future and if a teacher (or other adult) can generate a wow moment which sends a student off to study science or maths rather than media studies or advertizing then........ there is still some hope for the world!
