On October 5 I was asked to show the sun in H-alpha and white light on the open day at the Kapteyn Astronomical Institute and SRON (Dutch Space Research Organisation). As luck would have it, it was cloudy, but fortunately I had data from Oct 4 to show (including flare) and many older images. I also set up the scopes inside so I could explain things (and give the mandatory stern warnings about safety in solar observation). Marlies van de Weijgaart (the local organiser) also provided some little assignments for the kids, like measuring the sizes of various solar features, or the rate of rotation of the sun from prints of various images I sent her. Despite the grey weather the day was a great success, and many people came past (over 500 I gather). There were all sorts of other workshops, like soldering, building a mini spectroscope, and lectures for kids (of all ages). I just got a couple of photographs of the event. I am the one in the black Stargazerslounge polo shirt with the red logo (but you might have guessed that from the pphotos anyway ). Hopefully we will have better weather next year.
