First Outreach Event

Post by scotterton »

Hi Everyone! I'll be hosting my first outreach event this month on the 28th. Any advice for an outreach newbie?

I'm already crossing my fingers for good weather.

Congratulations. From my experience (this is not an advice but a suggestion) best way to cover the subject is interaction with students. As I experienced children find it boring if we give lectures, instead they enjoy when we allow then to ask questions and we give a detailed explanations to their questions and they start to explore!

Ya Scott! :)

Scott is my good friend and neighbor here in Atlanta and the winner of last years Jon Wood award. The program gave him a Meade LXD75 mount and a Meade AR6 refractor. We are hoping to do the outreach event together next Wednesday weather permitting. He is my internet and software guru and a great guy. In fact, he is in one of my time lapse videos...

I have a Baadar solar wedge and a camera adaptor for him from the club to use in his outreach next year...(shhhh its a surprise and made possible by the outreach club...:))

Had a GREAT time at this event! Being scheduled on the Wednesday after Christmas I expected many people to be on vacation. Despite that, we had about 20 visitors (about 60% kids), and this was inside a subdivision out of view of the main road leading to the neighborhood! I watched people slow down and take a look as they drove by, and a good number took the time to stop and ask what we were doing. The weather was gorgeous, I couldn't have asked for clearer skies.

I can't say enough about the support I've received from Stephen and the CBSAP. I'm a young guy with a five month old son and much of the equipment is out of my reach financially. Stephen has gone above and beyond to make sure that people who share his love of outreach are well-equipped. Through this club and the loaner equipment made available to me (CGEM, Baader wedge, Lunt 60mm double stack Ha, not to mention all the glasses and lanyards), I've been able to get the word out about CBSAP and generate some interest in school events in my area.

Trust me guys, outreach is addictive. The kids absolutely love it; they ask some really great questions and it's hard to get them away from the eyepiece. My next two events will be tomorrow in my neighborhood and this Tuesday when I head back to work. I'm going to set up the new rig at my office building during my lunch and invite my coworkers out to take a look.
