New Addition to Outreach
New Addition to Outreach
So I went ahead and made a sungun. Turned out pretty good. I tested it on my ED127 and it projected a nice 12" diameter solar disk showing the small sunspots. So now it time to buy a seperate scope and stand for it so I can use it in my outreach events.

I agree it is pretty cool. Looking forward to using it next week at a school event. Bruce Hegerberg was the one who came up with it. I want a wider field of view eyepiece to make the image larger on the screen.

Re: New Addition to Outreach
that is very clear for a SunGun. I have never seen one that I thought was useful at all.

Re: New Addition to Outreach
Thanks everyone. I found an inexpensive 102mm Refractor today. It has a solar system alignment method which allows you to use a planet or the sun. The projector screws directly into the focuser so that part is solid. I had to add some counterweight to the front so the telescope would stay where its pointed. The whole unit is a little shaky, partly due to the cheap tripod, but I think this is going to work out pretty good.

Re: New Addition to Outreach
That is the same 102 we have been using for the CaK experiment. It is a great scope for the price. Reports say it is also great for white light. The mount is excellent for the lil PST's and the hand set alone is worth the buy in. We can now say it makes a great sun gun too!
Look Up!

Re: New Addition to Outreach
That is a great SunGun Earl.
You have inspired me to look into building one too, as it would be a great addition for any outreach program.
I have a little 60 mm spotting scope that I'll start with and work my way up from there.

Re: New Addition to Outreach
Thanks again. I am looking forward to using it this Tuesday at a middle school in Dallas. Brad ... if you want to make one then go to www.sunguntelescope.com where you will find the instructions on how make a sungun. The projection system will run around $200 not including the eyepiece and filter. I didn't want to tie up my other scopes so I looked around and found a new Nexstar 102GT telescope for $150.00. All together the system ran around $400.
