Announcing International SUNday 2014!!

Post by solarchat »

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT!

Social media has absolutely revolutionized astronomy and STEM outreach! CBSAP social media director Pamela Shivak had a great idea a few weeks ago…”let’s have an international day of celebration for sharing the Sun through social media!”
Well, we’re gonna do it and make this the absolute coolest, most original social media event ever. Here’s the plan:

International SUNday will be on Sunday, June 22nd, 2014. We at the Charlie Bates Solar Astronomy Project will kick off the day with a LIVE Google+ broadcast from Home Hill High School in Queensland, Australia with live views of the Sun and celebrity hosts NASA Goddard’s Dr. Steele Hill , CBSAP Director Stephen W. Ramsden and Andy Lunt-owner of Lunt Solar Systems.

Then, the 24 hour global outreach event will ride around the globe with the Sun and we will be supporting outreach events from every country on Earth that wants to participate. This will be the LARGEST EVER astronomy outreach event and will spread the science that we all love so much with anyone on Earth who wants to join in.

Every social media site on the planet that wants to promote and share the Sun this day will be welcomed in as partners. We want to “light up” the internet with solar astronomy outreach and all join forces to promote interest in the Sun and its affect on life on the Earth.

How can you help?

We want everyone on Earth to share with us on social media what they love about our nearest star. We want you to creatively share your impressions about the Sun through poetry, imaging, sketching, music, dance, video, whatever you feel! We want to share it with others in the months and days leading up to this event. We also want you to plan your own International SUNday appreciation event and share it with all of your friends on social media. Any way you can dream up to show how the Sun affects you personally will be very welcomed during this celebration.

The Charlie Bates Solar Astronomy Project will send you free solar glasses if you need them so that you can have your own mini-outreach event in your own community to join in with us on June 22nd! We want to get every country on Earth to participate so that this will be remembered as the culmination of all of our efforts to popularize the Sun on social media.

If you run a social media site that wants to participate, just notify us and we will add you on to the list. All you have to do is promote it to your followers. If you are a Sun lover like us, start by submitting your creative ways of sharing and appreciating the Sun right away on any of our Facebook or Google+ pages so that we can start the buzz. If you are a celebrity science speaker, writer, magazine editor, etc… join us in promoting this largest ever global outreach event by promoting it through your medium. If you are an astronomy vendor, join us by tying in your products to promote solar astronomy for the day.

This event will be free of advertisers, free of donation requests, free of egos, etc… Just a massive global attempt to bring solar science and art to the forefront for one day, strictly to benefit mankind in its quest for exploration and discovery.

“The Sun’s light can change the world”

I don't have any plans on involving any government entities as I have a great aversion to paperwork and red tape after 30 years of government service. I think we have enough people involved in our totally grassroots efforts to make it a pretty decent event. Of course, CBSAP types will report their efforts to NSN. I tried to get them involved in the Australian trip but they weren't interested.

Stephen,
Our community observatory is planning to host a solar open house on Solar SUNday, June 22nd. Our Venus Transit open house hosted over 900 guests, proving that the public shares our fascination with the Sun. We'll have about a dozen Ha scopes from 40mm PST's to 90mm Coronado's, plus several white light refractors in the 80-100mm range.
We'll also be hosting solar presentations on our nearby college campus. Don't know the exact presentation program yet, but we still have time to put that together. We just formed a group to develop an advertising plan for the event and have been getting excellent response from our Observatory Docent team. This will be a blast!
Your planned event has really built a fire under our observatory volunteers. Since the observatory is self-supporting, we can use as many solar glasses as you can make available.

be happy to provide them thanks to the financial support of some members here in the SolarChat! forum during our yearly fundraiser in November. Our program is self supporting too in case you didn't know. It is all my wife and I and donors from this forum and Facebook. No government grants, no corporate support

I can make available 150,000 pairs which is obviously too many. How's about a thousand freebies (they CANNOT be sold under any circumstances) to start? You can also order them here for the same price I pay if you plan on selling them.

That's awesome Forrest! Can you provide us with your club's logo and a link to their Facebook page or website? We would like to add them to the International SUN-day webpage as a participating partner! Your event sounds like it's going to be great! Be sure and take a LOT of pictures and video! If you can get the videos on Youtube.com them we can share them with the Facebook group! Good luck!

If you plan to participate as a club or organization, could I ask that you provide your LOGO and a link to either your website or Facebook page? That will save me a lot of time and reduce the margin of error. You may also add any details of what your club or organization plans to do if you know that at this time. I will share your logos and plans on the International SUN-day Facebook page as diligently as I can. Here is the link to the facebook group page, feel free to join if you aren't FB shy! :) :thanx: https://www.facebook.com/groups/InternationalSUNday/

Hi Pam

The Astronomy centre http://www.astronomycentre.org.uk/

just north of Manchester.

The BBC Stargazing Live event only occurs in the first week of January http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b019h4g8

and they advertise local star parties here http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b019h4g ... res/events

but they wouldn't film anything in the summer. Sometimes the BBC Sky at Night programme go round star parties and film the event. I have no idea how we could get them interested in filming an event though for an episode?

Hi all! Just a quick update for International SUN-day. New groups have been coming on board every day!
I had a meeting with the president of Slooh.com and they will be doing a SUN-day broadcast production on June 22nd, 2014.
I will feed them images from our participating partner's live events and they will work the pictures into the broadcast!
I'm pretty excited about that! If any of you have a club that's interested in organizing a solar party let me know and I will add you to the list. Clear skies solar friends! http://events.slooh.com/
