SpecLineMerge program update

Post by Wah »

My SpecLineMerge program is updated to support straighten the spectral lines with sin function

.NET framework 2.0 required.

Attached files SpecLineMergeSetup_2014-01-16.zip (421.5 KB)

I will leave this here for a while to gather attention Wah, then move it to the solar library :)

Wah
It's "Smile" correction.
(then you have "Tilt" where the spectral image doesn't lie exactly horizontally across the CCD chip, and "slant" where the absoption/emission lines lie at an angle within the spectrum.)
The corrections are usually applied TILT>SMILE>SLANT.
All the spectroscopy pre-processing programs usually do these corrections automatically - SPCAudAce/BASS Project/ISIS etc

Yes, my program do the tilt before smile, I have no idea what slant is. Is it similar to the "slew" function in Photoshop?

I don't know SPCAudAce/BASS Project, and I tried to learn using ISIS but seems not easy...
That's why I wrote a program for myself.

You could try to use IRIS first.
BASS project also has a very nice function about these corrections!

IRIS, do you mean the program that need a lot of command input to process images?
I haven't learnt it yet although I knew it for some years already

Wah,
No, IRIS still exists as an image processing software.
Buil's new ISIS is a dedicated spectroscopy package.

I don't know what the Photoshop equivalent is - you need to calculate/ measure the slant angle and shift each pixel row by the amount required to achieve vertical alignment...
Check out BASS Project:

I just tried to join the BASS yahoo group, but failed to input the verification codes... I've tried many times, really.
Maybe I will try on another computer later.

I also tried to read the ISIS page again:
http://www.astrosurf.com/buil/isis/isis_en.htm
I carefully look at the topics and some of the tutorial pages but didn't find hints about creating spectroheliogram from a series of spectrum.
Could anyone help me to point out those pages?
Thanks!

Ken, correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe IRIS and the other software packages mentioned correct smile, slant and so forth in a video file. This would be the requirement for application to spectroheliograph imaging.

Wah, does your software correct spectral line curvature in the video file?

The latest function added is to correct the bent spectral line, which is the "smile".
The math I use is the sine function, I GUESS it would be good enough to use if the curve is not very serious...
Or do you have any better math functions to stop the spectral lines smiling? :P

All the standard spectroscopy packages are designed to handle stacking etc. to produce a single corrected image.
I hadn't tried it but I was hoping that the AVI would be converted to a series of BMP images and batch processed (Tilt/smile/ slant) on each prior to stacking for a spectroheliogram.
(D Defourneau used IRIS - Scan2pic to stack, see also Buil's work:
http://www.astrosurf.com/buil/us/chromo/chromo.htm)

Ah~ I get it! :cheer: :hamster: :thanx:
It seems command input is unavoidable in IRIS.
Although my program is not that powerful, it is more user friendly for newbies like me :P

Basically you convewrt your image sin .pic format and then they are stiched.

Just remember that IRIS reads files that are saved inside its " Home folder".

If I remember right, during the installation a folder is created as C:Iris.
Then you have to throw all your files there and Iris will be able to find them. Also after the pic2scan command all the.pic images will be saved on that folder.

Hi all,

I've got this program updated based on Ken's suggestion, you may have a look!
No need to install, just unzip it.
Thanks!

I think it should be fine, you just need to install MS .net framework 2.0 or above.
